Short answer

January 2027 is Phuket's driest and calmest month, but it has few fixed events. Banks close on Friday 1 January for New Year's Day, a three-day break to Sunday 3 January. National Children's Day is Saturday 9 January. Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, so red lanterns can start to go up around Phuket Town in late January; the 2027 festival dates in Phuket had not been announced by early November. EDC Thailand has moved from January to December. Hotel rates are highest in the first two weeks of the month.

01The fixed dates are Friday 1 January (New Year's Day, a bank holiday) and Saturday 9 January (Children's Day, not a public holiday). Phuket 101's calendar listed no other January 2027 event on 2 November.
02Chinese New Year is Saturday 6 February 2027. Phuket's festival dates are usually announced only a few weeks ahead, so check again in January.
03January is the most popular month: hotel rates are highest in the first two weeks, so book beachfront rooms one to two months ahead.

What is on in Phuket in January 2027?

January is Phuket's driest and calmest month, but it has few fixed events. The dated items are New Year's Day on Friday 1 January, National Children's Day on Saturday 9 January and, just after the month ends, Chinese New Year on Saturday 6 February 2027, whose build-up starts in late January. The events section of Phuket 101's January page showed 'No events listed for these dates yet' when we opened it on 2 November 2026.

That is a real answer, not a gap in our research. Phuket 101 calls January the most popular month, and the draw is the weather and the sea, not a festival calendar. Phuket 101 also says exact schedules for the Chinese New Year events are usually announced only a few weeks before the event, so check again in January.

Is New Year's Day a holiday, and how long is the break?

For banks, yes. The Bank of Thailand's list, as the Nation reported on 28 August 2026, makes Friday 1 January 2027 a bank holiday, and the Nation counts a three-day break from 1 to 3 January. Banks reopen on Monday 4 January. Wikipedia's list of Thai public holidays also shows 1 January as a public holiday observed by government agencies.

For a visitor the holiday matters less than the end of the Christmas break. Phuket 101 says hotel rates are highest in the first two weeks of January, because many guests extend their Christmas and New Year holidays, and it advises booking well in advance. If your dates are flexible, a date in the second half of the month is the easier one to book.

What is National Children's Day, and does it change a visit?

National Children's Day is on the second Saturday of January, which is 9 January 2027. Wikipedia lists it as a national observance, not a public holiday, and says it is widely celebrated, especially by government agencies, with many activities for children. Teachers' Day follows on Saturday 16 January, and schools may close for it.

We found no Phuket programme for Children's Day 2027, and it is early to expect one. If you travel with children, our guide to Phuket with kids covers beaches, tours with age limits and the heat.

When does the Chinese New Year build-up start in Phuket?

Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, according to the Thaiger's festival guide, and it opens the Year of the Goat. It is not a public holiday in Phuket: the Bank of Thailand's extra Chinese New Year bank holiday applies only in Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, Satun and Songkhla. Phuket 101 says red lanterns go up around Phuket Town and at the Chinese shrines weeks before the festival, so late January is when the Old Town starts to look different.

For 2026, Phuket 101 gave 22 to 24 February for the Phuket Town festival events, five days after Chinese New Year on 17 February, and 16 to 22 February for the Wat Chalong Fair. The 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked. Our guide to Chinese New Year 2027 in Phuket covers the Old Town, the shrines and what to eat. Phuket 101 adds that the most popular beachfront hotels sell out weeks ahead over New Year and Chinese New Year.

Is EDC Thailand in Phuket in January 2027?

No. EDC Thailand ran from 16 to 18 January 2026 at Rhythm Park, and Phuket 101 says the festival moved to December for 2026. The festival's own website gives 18, 19 and 20 December 2026. We found no EDC date for 2027. Phuket 101 says hotels near Bang Tao fill up fast once EDC dates are announced, so this January should be calmer there than January 2026. Our December guide has the new dates, the hours and the age limit.

The practical effect is small but real. Bang Tao rooms and roads are not under festival pressure in January 2027. The first two weeks of the month are still when hotel rates are highest, according to Phuket 101, and the road between Patong and Kata or Karon is congested in the evenings.

What are the weather and the sea like in January?

Phuket 101 calls January the driest month of the year and describes the sea as calm and clear, with a water temperature of 28 °C. Its January averages are a day temperature of 32.7 °C, a night temperature of 24.5 °C, about 4 rainy days and about 30 mm of rain, with humidity of 70 percent and a UV index of 11, which it labels extreme. It says all beaches are safe for swimming and that visibility for diving and snorkelling is at its best.

Our Phuket in January guide gives the Thai Meteorological Department's figures and explains why the north-east monsoon keeps the west coast calm. A speedboat can still be bumpy on a windy day, and if the sea is unsafe the operator moves our trip to another date or refunds it. Choose sunscreen without the four chemicals banned in marine parks for a boat day.

How crowded and expensive is January, and how should you book?

Phuket 101 says traffic is heavy around Patong and the southern beaches in January. It advises booking beachfront hotels at least one to two months ahead and popular boat tours a few days ahead, because places for guests who arrive without a booking are limited. Its tip for quiet beaches is the north: Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon, Banana Beach and Bang Tao. It also says February has almost identical weather with slightly fewer people.

Our Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat tour is from $75 per person. Maya Bay is open in January, because the park closes it only from 1 August to 30 September, and the Similan Islands are open until 14 May. Send us your date and hotel, and we confirm availability, the pickup time and the total before you pay.

What can you do on days without an event?

January weather suits sightseeing as much as the sea. Phuket 101 calls January exceptional for photography, with clear light and a blue sky. On land, our Phuket half-day city tour is from $25 per person and takes about 4 to 5 hours. It visits Karon Viewpoint, the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong and Phuket Old Town, with pickup in the morning, usually between about 8:00 and 9:00 am. Cover your shoulders and knees at the temples.

For viewpoints, our Phuket viewpoints guide compares Karon, Black Rock, Khao Rang and the Big Buddha. Our Old Town walking guide covers Thalang Road and the shrines, where red lanterns appear weeks before Chinese New Year. For evenings, our guide to Phuket night markets says which market opens on which night.

Practical checklist

  • Book beachfront hotels for the first two weeks of January now, because Phuket 101 says rates peak then.
  • Draw cash before Friday 1 January; banks are closed on the holiday and the weekend that follows.
  • Check Chinese New Year programmes in Phuket in January; the date is Saturday 6 February 2027.
  • Choose a northern beach such as Bang Tao, Nai Yang or Mai Khao if you want a quieter stay.
  • Book popular boat days a few days ahead.
  • Pack sunscreen, because the UV index in January is 11.
