Short answer
Pick the Phuket night market by the day of the week. On Sunday it is the Walking Street on Thalang Road in Phuket Town. Naka Weekend Market runs on Saturday and Sunday, Chillva Market from Monday to Saturday, and Karon Temple Market on Tuesday and Friday. Kata Night Market and Malin Plaza in Patong open daily from 2 pm. Phuket 101 gave these hours in September and October 2026. Go at sunset, bring small notes in cash and eat at the market instead of before it.
The short answer: pick the market by the night of the week
Phuket 101's guide to 11 night markets, updated on 2 October 2026, gives the rule most visitors need: choose the market by the night, not by the location. Sunday means Lard Yai, the Walking Street on Thalang Road. Saturday and Sunday means Naka. Tuesday or Friday means Karon Temple Market, and any weeknight means Chillva. The guide's point is that the market on tonight is almost always worth the drive.
The listed hours are Walking Street on Sunday, Naka on Saturday and Sunday from 4 pm to 10 pm, Chillva from 5 pm to 11 pm Monday to Saturday, Karon Temple Market on Tuesday and Friday from 4 pm to 10 pm, Indy Market from Wednesday to Friday, Fun Friday at Bang Tao on Fridays from 5 pm to 10 pm, and Kata, Malin Plaza and Karon Plaza every day. Confirm on the day, since markets change their schedules.
Sunday: the Walking Street on Thalang Road
Phuket 101 calls the Sunday Walking Street, known to locals as Lard Yai, the most popular market on the island. Thalang Road closes to traffic and becomes a 360-metre stretch of food stalls, crafts and street performers between the old Sino-Portuguese shophouses; the market started in late 2013 and now spills onto a second street. The guide advises arriving around sunset for the light and before the crowd peaks.
Its hours need a note. The guide's market list says the Walking Street opens from 4 pm and gives 5 pm to 9 pm in one listing, while its separate Walking Street guide, updated on 30 September 2026, says 4 pm to 9 pm. Aim for late afternoon, and treat the end time as 9 pm, although the guide says it often runs later. Our Old Town walking guide covers the streets around it.
Naka and Chillva: the big weekend bazaar and the young weeknight market
Naka Weekend Market, on the edge of Phuket Town past Central Festival, is the biggest night bazaar in Phuket, Phuket 101 says, and runs on Saturday and Sunday from 4 pm to 10 pm. Locals call it Talad Tairod, the car boot sale. It sells clothes, souvenirs and a lot of copy goods, plus the widest spread of street food. The guide warns it is the hottest, loudest and hardest market to park at, and suggests the Walking Street if you dislike crowds.
Chillva Market on Yaowarat Road, between Tesco Lotus and Phuket Town, opened in 2014 and runs from Monday to Saturday, 5 pm to 11 pm, with free entry, according to Phuket 101. It is built from stacked shipping containers with small bars and live music, draws mostly young Thais, and sells more locally made clothing and fewer fake brands. The guide says a vintage market sets up on Tuesdays. It is closed on Sundays.
Patong: Banzaan, Malin Plaza and OTOP
Banzaan is Patong's fresh market, behind Jungceylon on Sai Kor Road, and both Wikivoyage and Phuket 101 recommend it. Phuket 101 says it is a proper fresh market in the morning and a street food zone by evening, and that the local habit is to pick lobster, prawns, fish, squid or crab from the stalls and carry them to a nearby kitchen to be cooked for a small fee. The guide calls this better value than a Patong seafood restaurant.
Malin Plaza, at the southern end of Patong Beach, is open daily from 2 pm to midnight, says Phuket 101, with food stalls, restaurants, bars and a bazaar section. The OTOP market, opposite the Hard Rock Cafe, opens from 10 am, though the food street gets going after 5 pm. Both Phuket 101 and Wikivoyage say OTOP mostly sells copies of branded goods, so go there for the food street, not for quality shopping.
Kata, Karon and Bang Tao: the small neighbourhood markets
Kata Night Market, hidden behind small hotels in the middle of Kata roughly behind the old Club Med site, is open daily from 2 pm to 11 pm, according to Phuket 101. It works like an open-air food court: you choose from different vendors, pay at each stall, then sit at any free table. The guide notes that it draws locals from Kata and Karon as well as visitors, and that it is one of the few markets open in the afternoon.
Karon Temple Market is held in the grounds of Wat Karon, about 500 metres inland from Karon Circle, on Tuesday and Friday from 4 pm to 10 pm. Phuket 101 describes monks in the temple and incense in the air, and advises arriving before sunset. On Fridays, Fun Friday Avenue Market runs from 5 pm to 10 pm at Boat Avenue in Bang Tao, the guide says, with modest stalls and restaurants beside it.
What the food costs, and what to eat
Phuket 101's Chillva guide, updated on 12 September 2026, says most dishes cost between 40 and 120 baht: grilled pork skewers 10 to 20 baht, fried rice or pad thai 50 to 80, grilled seafood 80 to 150, mango sticky rice 60 to 80, and Thai milk tea 25 to 35. It puts a full meal with drinks at 150 to 250 baht per person. These are one guide's figures for one market, so expect variation.
The Walking Street is the place for Phuket specialities, the guide says, among them a-pong crispy pancakes and o-eaw shaved ice, and Naka for the widest spread of grilled seafood, som tum and fried chicken. Phuket 101 notes that food prices are fixed and haggling over a plate of pad thai is rude, while clothing and souvenirs are open to bargaining, and it suggests offering around half the opening price.
Practical tips: sunset, cash and the weather
Phuket 101 suggests arriving at sunset, not after dinner: the light is better, the crowds are thinner, and by 8 pm most markets are packed. It also says many stalls still do not take cards or QR payments, and that 20 and 50 baht notes are the most useful. For where the sun sets, the US Naval Observatory data give about 18:04 to 18:49 across the year in the south of the island, so early evening is a sensible time.
These are open-air or half-covered markets, so rain matters. The World Meteorological Organization's 1991–2020 normals for Phuket, as tabulated by Wikipedia, give 336.0 mm of rain in October and 19.4 rainy days, against 24.0 mm in February. Phuket 101 mentions the covered, air-conditioned Oasis Thalang passage off Thalang Road as a refuge if rain starts, and our rainy day guide has more.
How a market fits with our half-day city tour
Our Phuket half-day city tour is from $25 per person, starts with pickup at about 8:00 to 9:00 am and ends with a walk around Thalang Road in Phuket Old Town, about 4 to 5 hours after pickup. Each stop takes about 15 to 60 minutes, and lunch, drinks and any entrance fees are paid on the day. No market is part of the tour, because the markets above open in the afternoon or evening.
The two pair well on a Sunday. Take the morning tour, rest at your hotel, then go back to Thalang Road for the Walking Street from about 4 or 5 pm; the road is the same one the tour ends on. On any other night, choose from the list above. Our travel guide to the tour describes the route, and our Phuket taxi and Grab prices guide covers the ride.
Practical checklist
- Check the day of the week first: Sunday is the Walking Street, Saturday and Sunday is Naka, Monday to Saturday is Chillva.
- Arrive around sunset, before the 8 pm crush.
- Bring 20 and 50 baht notes; many stalls do not take cards or QR payments.
- Eat at the market and bargain only for clothes and souvenirs, not for food.
- Expect copies of branded goods at Naka and OTOP, and decide before you pay.
- Check the weather; the markets are open-air, and October and September are the wettest months.
