When is Christmas in Phuket in 2026, and is it a holiday?

Christmas Eve falls on Thursday 24 December 2026 and Christmas Day on Friday 25 December. Neither is a public holiday in Thailand. Wikipedia's list of Thai public holidays puts Christmas among other observances and describes it as religious for Christians and widely observed commercially. Phuket 101, a long-running local guide, says that shops, banks, markets and transport all run as normal on 24 and 25 December.

So nothing closes for visitors, but the island does dress up. Phuket 101 says malls and the old town put up decorations. The December public holidays fall before and after it: Wikipedia's list gives 5 December (King Bhumibol Adulyadej's Birthday) and 10 December (Constitution Day) before Christmas, and 31 December after it. For the weather and the sea, read our Phuket in December guide, and for the rest of the month see our December events guide.

Where can you have Christmas Eve dinner in Phuket, and what does it cost?

Most hotels hold their big night on the 24th, Phuket 101 says, usually as a buffet or a set dinner by the pool or on the beach, often with live music. We read its Christmas listing, updated in October 2026, and the event pages behind it, which repeat the hotels' announcements. In Kamala, the Hyatt Regency Phuket lists its dinner from 18:30 to 22:30 at 2,280 baht with soft drinks or 3,430 baht with an alcohol package, half price for children aged 6 to 12, and 10 percent off if you book by 1 December. In Patong, the Mövenpick Myth Hotel lists a buffet from 18:00 to 22:00 at 2,190 baht, or 2,980 baht with a wine package, and 1,000 baht for children aged 6 to 12; children under 6 eat free, and its early-bird 10 percent applies to bookings from 1 September to 23 December.

Pullman Phuket Karon Beach Resort lists a dinner on its Lagoon Lawn from 18:30 to 22:00 at 3,490++ per adult with soft drinks, or 4,490++ with wine, beer and cocktails, with 20 percent off vouchers bought before 1 December. In Naithon, Pullman Phuket Arcadia lists the ECHO buffet at 3,900++ per adult, food only, and a five-course Italian set at VERO for 6,900++, which includes a bottle of Moët & Chandon Piccolo Brut per adult. Four Points by Sheraton Patong lists a buffet at 2,750 baht, food only, and Hotel Indigo Phuket Patong's Butcher's Garden lists 2,750 baht for adults, or 2,475 baht if you book before 20 December. In Panwa, My Beach Resort lists 2,650 baht.

These are the hotels' own figures as printed in the listings, so confirm them before you book. Some carry a ++ or another note, and we did not find what each one includes, so ask each hotel for the final bill with service charge and tax. Phuket 101 warns that Christmas dinners fill up and that the beachfront ones go first, and advises booking directly with the hotel well ahead.

What about Christmas Day brunch and lunch?

Christmas Day is more relaxed, Phuket 101 says: hotels switch to long family brunches and lunches, so it is the easier day to go with children. The Hyatt Regency lists its brunch on 25 December from 12:30 to 16:00 at 2,410 baht with soft drinks or 3,480 baht with an alcohol package, half price for children aged 6 to 12. In Patong, the M Social Hotel lists a brunch at its Beast & Butterflies restaurant from 12:00 to 15:30 at 1,750 baht for adults, with a mulled wine included, and 1,200 baht for children aged 6 to 12; it offers 20 percent off adult buffets booked by 30 November.

Some Christmas Day buffets are evening meals, not brunches. Pullman Phuket Arcadia lists a carvery buffet at ECHO from 18:00 to 22:00 at 2,900++ per adult, and Four Points Patong lists its Christmas Day buffet from 18:00 to 22:00 at 1,850 baht, food only; both listings give children's prices. If you would rather spend the day outside a hotel, Phuket 101 suggests a slow walk through the old town and a stop at a cafe, and our Phuket Old Town walking guide shows where to go.

Are there Christmas church services in Phuket?

Phuket has three Catholic churches, according to the St Joseph's parish website: St Joseph's in Cherngthalay, Assumption Church in Phuket Town and Sacred Heart Church in Patong. On normal weeks, St Joseph's holds Mass at 07:00 on weekdays, 18:30 on Saturday and 09:00 and 11:00 on Sunday, all in English. Assumption Church holds Sunday Mass at 09:00 in Thai and 11:00 in English, and Sacred Heart in Patong holds Sunday Mass at 16:00 in English.

The parish had not posted Christmas 2026 times when we looked on 3 November 2026. Phuket 101 says the churches publish them in early December on the parish website, and the parish's news page shows a Christmas schedule posted on 6 December 2024 but none for 2025, so also check the parish's Facebook page or call the office on +66 76 390 905, the number on its website. The 2024 pattern is a guide only: Christmas Eve Mass at 21:00 in English at St Joseph's, at 19:00 at Assumption Church and at 21:00 at Sacred Heart, with Christmas Day Masses at 11:00 at St Joseph's and at Assumption Church (Thai and English), and at 16:00 in English and 17:00 in Italian at Sacred Heart.

St Joseph's also held a 05:00 Misa de Gallo from 16 to 24 December and a remembrance Mass for the tsunami victims on 26 December at 11:00. The parish advises arriving early, because these services are often well attended. Phuket 101 also names Phuket International Church in Chalong and All Nations Church in Phuket Town as holding Sunday services in English; we did not check their Christmas plans.

Which part of Phuket suits which kind of Christmas?

Where you stay shapes the day more than anything else, Phuket 101 says. Patong is where Christmas is loudest: hotels along the beach road hold Christmas Eve dinners, and afterwards the crowd moves to Bangla Road, which runs as late as on any other night. Kamala is calmer, with beachfront resort dinners and a few beach clubs, and Surin next door is smaller and quieter still.

Bang Tao has the island's biggest cluster of resorts, most of them inside Laguna Phuket, so it is the busiest area for hotel dinners and brunches and the easiest for families. Kata and Karon are the family beaches of the west coast, with resort dinners, beachfront restaurants and an easy walk home. The south, around Rawai and Nai Harn, is more low-key and local. The north, around Mai Khao and Nai Yang, is the quietest, and Christmas there is your hotel's own dinner, so pick the resort for its programme as much as for the room.

How much do rooms cost at Christmas, and how early should you book?

Christmas week is peak season. Phuket 101's high-season guide, updated on 10 July 2026, puts the peak from mid-December to February, with hotel prices 30 to 50 percent higher than in the low season. It says the most popular beachfront hotels sell out weeks ahead, especially over New Year, and advises booking at least one to two months ahead for a stay within walking distance of a west-coast beach. Its Christmas page adds that the week between Christmas and New Year is the busiest of the year and that rooms cost the most.

One event can squeeze the Bang Tao area just before Christmas. The festival's own site gives EDC Thailand as 18, 19 and 20 December 2026 at Rhythm Park, from 15:00 to 24:00 each day, for guests aged 20 and over with photo ID. Phuket 101 says hotels near Bang Tao fill up fast once the dates are announced and that the roads there get busy at opening and closing times. The festival ends four days before Christmas Eve, so a stay that starts on 21 December or later does not overlap its days, but check your hotel's own dates.

The early-bird deadlines in the listings are for dinners, not rooms: 30 November for the M Social brunch, 1 December for the Hyatt Regency and Pullman Karon vouchers, 20 December for the Butcher's Garden dinner and 23 December for the Mövenpick Myth dinner. Booking before the deadline is cheaper than paying at the door.

Which tours fit around a Christmas dinner?

December is the start of the dry season, Phuket 101 says, with sunny days, blue skies and a calm, clear sea on the west-coast beaches, so boat days run. A full boat day does not mix well with an 18:00 table. Our Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat tour is from $75 per person, takes about 8.5 hours and starts with hotel pickup between about 7:00 and 8:30 am, so we would put it on 23 or 26 December rather than on the 24th. Phuket 101 says popular boats fill up days ahead in peak season, so ask us early.

For Christmas Day morning, our Phuket half-day city tour is from $25 per person, takes about 4 to 5 hours, and starts with hotel pickup between about 8:00 and 9:00 am. It covers Karon Viewpoint, the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong and the Old Town, so it ends around midday or early afternoon, and we suggest a brunch table from 13:00 or a dinner. Send us your date and we check the return time against your booking.

What else happens around Christmas?

New Year's Eve comes a week later. Phuket 101 calls it the biggest night of the year, with fireworks over the beaches at midnight, and says it is worth staying for both. We cover the countdowns, beach parties and getting home in our New Year's Eve in Phuket guide. If you like boats, the 38th Phuket King's Cup Regatta runs from 5 to 12 December 2026 at Kata, and our King's Cup Regatta guide has the programme.

Christmas is not one of the Buddhist holy days on which Wikipedia says alcohol sales are banned, so the normal rules apply: shops may sell from 11:00 to 24:00, as our alcohol hours guide explains. To get around on the 24th, when everyone goes to dinner at once, see our Phuket taxi and Grab guide and arrange the ride home before you sit down.

Practical checklist

  • Book the Christmas Eve dinner directly with the hotel, and ask for the final bill with service charge and tax.
  • Check the early-bird deadline: 30 November, 1 December, 20 December or 23 December, depending on the hotel.
  • Look for the 2026 Mass times on the parish website in early December, and arrive early.
  • Book a beachfront room one to two months ahead, and avoid the Bang Tao area on 18 to 20 December unless you want EDC.
  • Keep the evening of the 24th free of boat days, and arrange your ride home before dinner.
