Short answer
New Year's Eve falls on Thursday 31 December 2026, a bank holiday, and Friday 1 January is another. The biggest free countdown is on the sand at Patong Beach, with fireworks at midnight, according to Phuket 101. The 2026/27 programme had not been announced by early November. Last year Patong closed Thaweewong Road, Ruamjai Road and the Sea Pearl intersection to vehicles from 10:30 pm to 1 am and banned fireworks and sky lanterns without permission, with penalties of up to three years in prison or a fine of 60,000 baht.
Where are the New Year's Eve fireworks in Phuket in 2026?
New Year's Eve falls on Thursday 31 December 2026. Phuket 101's guide, updated on 27 September, says the biggest free show is the Patong countdown on the sand of Patong Beach. Elsewhere the fireworks come from venues: Kamala and Bang Tao get midnight shows from beach clubs, and resorts around Nai Harn run displays for their gala guests. Karon and Kata have no official show, so what you see there depends on what the beachfront hotels put on. Phuket Old Town is decorated with lights, but there is no organised countdown there.
We found no official 2026/27 programme from Patong or the province by 2 November. The Thaiger's festival guide lists its own Phuket New Year guides as due on 10 December. Details for New Year's Eve have been announced in the last days of December in past years, so use this page to choose an area now and check the programme nearer the date.
What is the Patong countdown, and what happened last year?
Phuket 101 says the Patong countdown usually runs for three nights leading up to 31 December, with Thai bands on stage each evening and a big fireworks display at midnight on the last night. It says the event is free and needs no booking: you walk onto the beach and find a spot. Last year it was called 'Music on the Sand @ Patong Beach', and the Phuket News reported on 30 December 2025 that tens of thousands of tourists were expected on the beachfront and Bangla Road.
Patong Police announced that the Sea Pearl intersection, Thaweewong Road and Ruamjai Road would be closed to vehicles from 10:30 pm on 31 December to 1 am on 1 January, and gave 076-342769 as the number for details. In 2023 the Phuket News reported that the crowds brought traffic in and around central Patong to a standstill, with no major trouble reported by the authorities. If the 2026/27 plan is similar, treat Patong as an area to walk in, not to drive through.
Which other beaches and venues have a midnight show?
Phuket 101 lists several beach clubs with a countdown. Cafe del Mar in Kamala holds a themed gala dinner followed by a beach countdown with fire performers, aerial shows and fireworks, and Phuket 101 says to book well ahead. Catch Beach Club in Bang Tao offers dinner from early evening, DJs and a midnight fireworks show. Tann Terrace at the south end of Karon Beach has dinner by the sea and music past midnight. Fira, a rooftop beach club above Kata Noi, is described as a place to watch the last sunset of 2026, and Phuket 101 says to book a table ahead. Super Surf Kata has DJs on its roof, and Barra Cuda on Patong Beach is for adults aged 20 and over.
In Patong, the club Illuzion on Bangla Road runs from 9 pm until the early hours, according to Phuket 101, and fills up fast. Paradise Beach, in a cove about 4 kilometres south of Patong, holds a countdown party on 31 December, with a free shuttle from the police box opposite Bangla Road from 7 pm to midnight. Central Phuket Floresta near Phuket Town is described as one of the island's biggest countdowns, with Thai artists, international DJs and midnight fireworks at the Phuket Outdoor Arena. Clubs and festivals set their own age limits and ticket terms. The legal drinking age is 20, as our alcohol rules guide explains, so carry ID.
What do hotel galas cost, and are they compulsory?
Phuket 101's calendar lists the Hyatt Regency Phuket Resort's New Year's Eve gala dinner in Kamala at 8,890 baht per person as a food and alcohol package. It lists the resort's Casa Boho party at 9,990 baht per adult with free-flow alcohol, and a teppanyaki dinner at Mizu at 9,900 baht per person. It also lists galas and parties at hotels in Patong without a price, and a festive-season offer at Trisara from 24 December to 1 January. Last year the Thaiger listed gala dinners at prices from 3,499 baht to 19,000 baht per adult, some of them plus service charge and tax.
Phuket 101 says the gala dinner by the pool is often compulsory and expensive, and it tells guests to check whether the room rate includes it. It also says room rates on New Year's Eve are high, and that rooftop terraces in Patong are small and will probably be crowded, so come early. Book a gala, a club table or a hotel for the night weeks ahead.
Are there New Year's Eve boat parties in Phuket?
Yes, in other years. A Thai trade office's guide to the 2025/26 countdown says Phuket operators run evening cruises towards Phang Nga Bay, Koh Naka or along the west coast, with dinner, DJ sets and views of the fireworks, and that some private charters anchor off Surin or Kamala for midnight. One ticketed boat party from Chalong Pier last year sailed from 9 pm to 2 am, carried at most 80 passengers, admitted guests aged 21 and over, collected guests from their hotels from 6:30 pm and sold out.
We found no confirmed 2026/27 boat-party listing by 2 November. None of our tours is a New Year's Eve cruise. If you book one from another operator, confirm the pier, the sailing and return times, what is included, the age limit and the refund policy: last year's listing said tickets were non-refundable unless the organiser cancelled the event. The trade office's guide also warns that midnight traffic back to the hotels can be slow.
Can you release sky lanterns or set off fireworks?
No. Patong Municipality's notice before last year's countdown said that anyone lighting or selling fireworks or sky lanterns without permission faces up to three years in prison, a fine of up to 60,000 baht, or both. The municipality's mayor cited the risk to people, property and aircraft, the Phuket News reported. The Phuket Express, which also reported the notice, says the ban is not meant to dampen the festivities but to keep them safe.
The rule is not new. After the 2022/23 countdown the Phuket News reported that many people had ignored an official ban and that sky lanterns were visible above Patong and at Bang Tao, Layan and Surin, while organisers with permission ran the official firework shows. Do not buy a lantern from a vendor and do not release one. Our Loy Krathong guide explains the Air Navigation Act and the penalties near Phuket airport.
How bad is the traffic, and how do you get home?
A Thai trade office's guide says the roads on Phuket's west coast are jammed between 10 pm and 1 am. It advises you to pick one venue and stay in that area, and it says Patong is the most crowded while Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin are smoother. That fits the closure of the Patong roads from 10:30 pm to 1 am last year.
Plan the way home before midnight. The options are a walk, a hotel shuttle, a driver you booked or a ride app; our guides to Phuket taxi prices and Grab and to Grab or Bolt in Thailand explain fares and surge prices. Our Phuket safety guide lists the risks on a night out, and the Tourist Police hotline guide explains the number 1155.
What happens on 1 January, and which tour fits?
Friday 1 January 2027 is a bank holiday, and the Nation counts a three-day break from 1 to 3 January, so banks reopen on Monday 4 January. Draw cash beforehand. The first days of the year are among the busiest and most expensive for hotels, as our Phuket in December guide and Phuket in January guide explain.
After a late night, choose a tour with a late start. Our Phang Nga Bay sunset sea canoe tour picks guests up between about 10:00 and 11:15 am and is from $115 per person. Our Phuket half-day city tour is from $25 per person, picks up between about 8:00 and 9:00 am and takes 4 to 5 hours. Our Phi Phi day starts earlier, with pickup between about 7:00 and 8:30 am. We confirm availability for 1 January before you pay.
Practical checklist
- Choose one area for the whole night and avoid crossing the island between 10 pm and 1 am.
- Book a hotel gala, a beach-club table or a boat party weeks ahead, and check whether your hotel's dinner is compulsory.
- Do not buy or release sky lanterns or fireworks: the penalty can reach three years in prison or 60,000 baht.
- Agree your way home before midnight: a hotel shuttle, a booked driver or a walk.
- Carry photo ID, because clubs and parties set age limits of 20 or 21.
- Draw cash before the bank holidays on 31 December and 1 January.
