Short answer

New Year's Eve falls on Thursday 31 December 2026, a bank holiday, and Friday 1 January is another. The one big countdown announced by 2 November is centralwOrld Bangkok Countdown 2027, which Central Pattana says will have artists, special shows, fireworks and drone displays; the line-up was not yet named. ICONSIAM had not announced its plan. Last year the BTS, MRT, Red Line and Airport Rail Link ran until 2 am, but no hours for 2026/27 had been announced.

0131 December 2026 is a Thursday bank holiday, and Friday 1 January 2027 is one too, so banks are shut from Thursday 31 December to Sunday 3 January.
02Announced so far: centralwOrld Bangkok Countdown 2027 on 31 December, with fireworks and drone displays, and Banthat Thong Road's Christmas and New Year festival on 25 to 31 December. ICONSIAM, which ran a five-day countdown in 2025, had not announced 2026.
03On New Year's Eve 2025 the BTS, MRT, Red Line and Airport Rail Link ran until 2 am, and Thaiger and the Nation reported the schedules on 30 and 31 December. Check again in the last week of December.

Where is the New Year's Eve countdown in Bangkok in 2026?

Central Pattana announced on 19 October that centralwOrld Bangkok Countdown 2027 will take place at CentralWorld in the Ratchaprasong area on 31 December 2026, according to Thailand Hyperlinks, which cites the company's Facebook page. The programme is artist performances, special shows, fireworks and drone displays under the slogan The World Knows Where to Countdown. The report gives no start time or entry rules, the artist line-up had not been named, and we found no English-language version of the announcement.

For a sense of scale, Central Pattana's release of 29 December 2025 described an investment of more than 500 million baht in last year's edition and promised what it called the world's longest cityscape fireworks display, a digital countdown concert stage and a drone show, and said BTS service would run until 2:00 AM. A second release, on 5 January 2026, said more than 350,000 people attended. Those are the company's own claims. Time Out Bangkok describes the event as cityscape fireworks, choreographed drone displays, confetti at midnight and top artists performing until midnight. We found no notice limiting New Year events this year, although the royal funeral of Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother falls on 15 to 19 December; our Bangkok in December guide has those dates. CentralWorld also runs a Disney and Pixar Christmas display, A Celebration of Wonders, from 12 November to 3 January, with artificial snow four times each evening between 17:00 and 20:00, PostToday reported.

What about ICONSIAM and the river?

ICONSIAM held a five-day countdown at River Park on the Chao Phraya River from 27 to 31 December 2025. The organisers' releases described 1,400 metres of eco-friendly fireworks visible within an 8 km radius, more than 200 artists over five themed nights, and more than 1.8 million visitors in five days; those figures are the organiser's claims. Entry was by walk-in, with rewards for spending. The plan was announced in early December 2025, and we found no announcement of a 2027 plan by 2 November, so a river countdown is possible but not confirmed.

Banthat Thong Road, Bangkok's food street, will hold a Christmas and New Year festival from 25 to 31 December, the Nation reported on 26 October. It describes the festival as the district's first full-scale Christmas and New Year celebration, in the style of a Thai temple fair, with festive lighting, an illuminated tree, fairground game stalls and activities for families. The organisers' forecast of more than 300,000 attendees per festival is a projection. We found no other major Bangkok countdown announcement on 2 November.

Where can I watch the fireworks from a hotel rooftop?

Hotels publish their New Year's Eve packages early. The Okura Prestige Bangkok announced on 7 October a countdown on its Pool Terrace on the 25th floor from 22:00 to 01:00, at 7,000 baht net per table of four with one bottle, with live entertainment and a midnight fireworks display over Bangkok. Its Up & Above restaurant serves a dinner from 18:00 to 23:00 at 4,500 baht++ per person, and its Elements restaurant a seven-course dinner at 9,500 baht++.

Time Out Bangkok's partner content for the Sindhorn Midtown Hotel lists four options on 31 December. The ANJU rooftop has DJs from 21:00 to 02:00 and entry at 3,099 baht per person. The Horizon Pool Bar, on the 18th floor, runs from 23:00 to 01:00 with a fireworks view at 4,099 baht. The Veha buffet costs 3,699 baht for dinner and 5,999 baht with midnight. The hotel offers 10% off festive dining booked between 1 November and 10 December. These are the hotels' own prices and offers, so confirm them before you pay.

Which trains and roads run late on New Year's Eve?

No hours for 2026/27 had been announced on 2 November. Last year, Thaiger reported on 30 December that the BTS Sukhumvit Line's last trains left Khu Khot and Kheha at 02:00, the Silom Line's last trains left National Stadium at 02:44 and Bang Wa at 02:22, and the final trains from Siam to other stations left at 02:45. The MRT Blue, Purple, Yellow and Pink lines ran until 02:00. The Nation added on 31 December that the Red Line and the Airport Rail Link ran until 2 am, that bus services were extended, that Thai Smile electric boats ran between Asiatique, Sathorn, ICONSIAM and River City with a last outbound trip at 1 am, and that three expressways were toll-free overnight.

Expect a similar pattern, but confirm it in the last week of December. The BTS timetable page gives the normal hours as 05:00 to 01:00, with the last train from Siam at about 00:02, and says extra trains are added for special events. Thaiger said last year's passengers were advised to reach the platform at least five minutes before the last train and to use a Rabbit card or contactless payment to avoid queues, and that weapons, sharp objects, balloons and fireworks were banned from the system. Our BTS and MRT fares guide lists the fares, and our Grab and Bolt guide says which app works. If you plan to use a taxi or an app after midnight, allow for long waits near the countdown sites.

Are fireworks and sky lanterns allowed in Bangkok?

Not for the public. Wikipedia, citing a Thai PBS report of 2017, says that in Bangkok the public is prohibited from using fireworks and sky lanterns entirely, with a possible penalty of three years in prison or a 60,000-baht fine. The Nation reported in 2021 that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration banned the sale and use of fireworks and lanterns, and that events needed authorisation from a district office. Both reports were written for Loy Krathong, and we found no separate New Year notice for 2026/27, so treat the ban as the rule for visitors. The displays that hotels and shopping centres announce are theirs, not yours.

Alcohol has its own limit. The Tourism Authority of Thailand advised on 29 May 2026 that shops and restaurants may generally sell alcohol only from 11:00 to 24:00, while hotels and licensed entertainment venues may follow other conditions. A shop purchase at 00:30 on 1 January is not allowed, so buy before midnight; see our alcohol hours guide.

Is 31 December or 1 January a holiday, and what is open?

The Nation reported on 28 August that the Bank of Thailand lists Thursday 31 December as a bank holiday for 2026 and Friday 1 January 2027 on its 2027 calendar, which makes a long weekend of 1 to 3 January. By our count banks are shut from Thursday 31 December to Sunday 3 January. The list is for banks, and government offices and embassies can follow a different one; our 2027 holiday list has the rest of the year.

The Bangkok Art Biennale continues to 28 February 2027, but ICONSIAM's Christmas lights end on 25 December. For a palace visit on 1 January, check the Grand Palace's schedule page, which listed only November on 2 November, or phone +66 2 623 5500 ext. 2171. Our guide to Grand Palace hours and dress code explains how to check.

Can I plan New Year's Eve with SB Excursions in Bangkok?

Our night tuk-tuk food tour is from $40 per person. It starts at about 5:30 pm, rides past the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, stops at Wat Arun, the Giant Swing and the Pak Khlong Talat flower market, and ends with a street-food meal and dessert on Yaowarat Road at about 9:30 pm. It is not a countdown tour, and we have not set a special programme for 31 December. It ends early enough to reach a hotel or a rooftop before midnight, but the roads around the countdown sites may be slow, so ask us about your date.

For the first morning of the year, our Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun tour is from $75 per person, meets at about 8:30 am and takes about 4 hours, with the three entrance tickets included. If you want it on 1 January, tell us on WhatsApp and we check the palace schedule before we confirm.
