Short answer
How is this different from the James Bond Island day tour?
The James Bond Island day tour is a morning speedboat trip with up to 35 guests, lunch at Koh Panyee and a swim at Khai Island. This trip starts at midday on an escort boat and adds a sunset dinner on board, a krathong and a plankton paddle after dark. You are back in the evening.
This is the Phang Nga Bay trip run backwards: the caves and the sunset come first and the best part comes last, in the dark. The plankton is the one thing nobody can promise, so treat it as a bonus and enjoy the caves and the dinner for their own sake. Keep a dry, warm layer for the ride back, and keep phone screens dim and flashes off during the night paddle so everyone's eyes can adjust; phones rarely capture the glow anyway. This guide covers the Phang Nga Bay Sunset Sea Canoe & Plankton Tour from the pickup to the last stop — the mood, the route and the tips guides mention in passing.
What makes the Phang Nga Bay Sunset Sea Canoe & Plankton Tour worth your time
A driver collects you from your hotel in Phuket between about 10:00 and 11:15 am and takes you to Ao Por Pier for check-in and a safety briefing. The escort boat leaves at about 12:00-12:30 pm with a light Thai lunch on board. In the afternoon you canoe into the caves and lagoons of Panak and Hong islands and stop at James Bond Island, then have a buffet dinner on the boat at sunset. After dark you paddle out to float your krathong and look for plankton. You are back at the pier at about 8:00-8:30 pm and at your hotel at about 9:00-9:30 pm; the order of the stops changes with the tide.

Insider tips
The details a guide mentions on the day — worth knowing before it.
- National park fees are included, so there is nothing to pay at the pier.
- Wear swimwear under your clothes and bring dry, warm clothes for the ride back after dark.
- Water shoes or sandals with straps are better than flip-flops in and around the canoes.
- Take insect repellent for the mangroves and dusk.
- Leave valuables at your hotel; dry bags are provided for your phone and cash.
- Tell us your hotel when you book: pickup is included in the main resort areas, and far-away hotels may need an extra transfer fee.
Best time of year
November to April is the calmest season in Phang Nga Bay, with clearer skies and more predictable tides; from May to October the southwest monsoon brings rougher seas, but the bay is sheltered by its limestone islands and the tour runs on suitable days.
Whether it is worth the money and what the price covers is in why book it.
Questions and answers
How is this different from the James Bond Island day tour?
The James Bond Island day tour is a morning speedboat trip with up to 35 guests, lunch at Koh Panyee and a swim at Khai Island. This trip starts at midday on an escort boat and adds a sunset dinner on board, a krathong and a plankton paddle after dark. You are back in the evening.
Will I see the bioluminescent plankton?
It cannot be promised. The glow depends on the moon, the tide and the water, and it shows when something moves the water, such as a paddle or a hand. The guides look for a dark, sheltered spot for the night paddle.
Do I have to paddle the canoe myself?
No. A paddler sits in each canoe and does the paddling; you sit, look and take photos. You can paddle too if you want to.
What time is the hotel pickup?
Between about 10:00 and 11:15 am, depending on where your hotel is in Phuket. We confirm the exact time before the trip.
