Short answer
Our Phang Nga Bay sunset sea canoe tour from Phuket costs from $115 per person for about 10 to 11 hours. The price covers hotel pickup in Phuket, an escort boat with an English-speaking guide, a sea canoe with a paddler, a light Thai lunch, a Thai buffet dinner at sunset, the national park fees, life jackets, dry bags and accident insurance, so there is nothing to pay at the pier. You are back at your hotel at about 9:00 to 9:30 pm. Glowing plankton cannot be guaranteed.
How much is the Phang Nga Bay sunset tour from Phuket?
Our Phang Nga Bay sunset sea canoe tour costs from $115 per person. It is a shared tour with an escort boat and takes about 10 to 11 hours door to door. A driver collects you from your hotel in Phuket between about 10:00 and 11:15 am, the escort boat leaves Ao Por Pier at about 12:00 to 12:30 pm, and you are back at the pier at about 8:00 to 8:30 pm and at your hotel at about 9:00 to 9:30 pm.
Booking is done on WhatsApp. Send us the date, your hotel and the number of guests, and we confirm availability, the pickup time and the total before you pay. How and when you pay is agreed with your booking. The word 'from' means the starting price per person. For the order of the afternoon, see our travel guide for this tour and the tour schedule.
What is included in the price?
The price covers the round-trip hotel transfer in Phuket; the escort boat with an English-speaking guide; a sea canoe with a paddler; a light Thai lunch and a Thai buffet dinner; snacks and drinking water; a life jacket, a dry bag and accident insurance; and the national park fees. It is a long list for $115, and it is the reason to compare lists and not headline numbers when you look at any other offer.
Two lines deserve a second look. The first is the canoe: a paddler sits in each canoe and does the paddling, so you sit, look and take photos, and you can paddle too if you want to. The second is the meals. You have a light lunch on the way out and a buffet dinner on the boat at sunset, so there is no meal to buy on the day. Tell us about allergies or dietary needs when you book, so that we can pass them on.
Is there anything extra to pay, and what about the park fee?
The Phang Nga Bay national park fees are included, so you pay nothing extra at the pier. Wikipedia says Ao Phang Nga National Park was established on 29 April 1981 and covers about 400 square kilometres. For comparison, the independent guide Thai National Parks gives the entry fee as 300 baht for adults and 150 baht for children aged 3 to 14, as of June 2022, with lower rates for Thai citizens. That page is not an official notice and fees can change, so use it only to check an offer that leaves the fee out.
The extras are small. Hotels outside the main areas, for example Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Rawai and Cape Panwa, may need an extra transfer fee, so tell us your hotel when you book. Pickup is included in the main resort areas. Bring your own swimwear and towel, which are on the packing list and not in the inclusions. Tips and anything you buy for yourself are not part of the price. Dry bags for your phone and valuables are provided.
How is it different from the daytime James Bond Island tour?
The two tours share the bay and one stop, but little else. Our James Bond Island day tour starts at $85. It is a morning speedboat trip with up to 35 guests, lunch at Koh Panyee and a swim at Khai Island, about 8.5 hours long. The sunset tour starts at midday on an escort boat, adds a buffet dinner at sunset, a krathong and a plankton paddle after dark, and brings you back at about 9:00 to 9:30 pm. The starting prices are $30 apart.
Both include the national park fee, and both stop at James Bond Island, where Wikipedia says the limestone pinnacle Ko Tapu is about 20 metres tall, appeared in a 1974 film, and has had boats kept away from it since 1998. Our James Bond Island tour price guide sets out the day tour in full, and Phi Phi or James Bond Island compares it with Phi Phi. Choose the day tour for a swim and a lunch in a stilt village; choose this one for the evening.
What do you do on the water, and what decides the order?
A paddler takes you by sea canoe into the caves and lagoons of Panak and Hong islands, according to our tour information, and the order of the stops changes with the tide. Liz Price's 2011 paper on the hongs of Phang Nga Bay says access through the caves depends on the tide, that low entrances can limit it to an hour or so around low tide, and that Ko Panak has at least nine hong lakes, four of them more than 100 metres across. Wikipedia gives the tides at Khao Phing Kan an amplitude of 2 to 3 metres.
Plan the evening around the light. The Sunrise-Sunset.org calendar for Phuket gives sunset at 6:05 pm on 1 November 2026 and 6:27 pm on 15 January 2027, so dinner at sunset falls at about six in the evening, and the night paddle follows in the dark. For the caves and the tides in more detail, our guide to the Phang Nga Bay canoe tour explains what a hong is and why the tide decides the route.
Will you see the plankton, and is it worth paying for?
Treat the plankton as a bonus. Our tour information says it is a natural event: how bright it is depends on the moon, the tide and the water, so a sighting cannot be guaranteed. It shows when something moves the water, such as a paddle or a hand, and the guides look for a dark, sheltered spot for the night paddle. The caves, the lagoons and the sunset dinner are the parts you can count on.
The night paddle also includes floating a krathong. Keep your phone screen dim and your flash off so that everyone's eyes can adjust, and expect that phones rarely capture the glow anyway. For what the plankton is and why it glows, read our guide to bioluminescent plankton in Phuket and Krabi. Judge the tour by the parts you can count on.
Who should not book this tour?
Skip it if you are pregnant, have a heart condition or another serious medical condition, have had recent surgery or an injury, or are severely claustrophobic, because some caves have low ceilings. Children from 4 years old can join; younger children and guests over 75 may not be accepted, so ask us before booking. It is also a long day: 10 to 11 hours, with a ride back in the dark. Bring dry, warm clothes for that ride.
If you want a cheaper sunset tour with snorkelling instead of caves, our Krabi 7 Islands sunset tour starts at $40 per person and returns you to your hotel at about 7:30 to 8:00 pm. It is a different trip: a longtail boat from Ao Nang, with a national park fee of 200 baht per adult and 100 per child paid in cash at the pier. Our Krabi 7 Islands price guide covers what that tour costs.
What changes with the season and the weather?
November to April is the calmest season in Phang Nga Bay, with clearer skies and more predictable tides. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings rougher seas, but the bay is sheltered by its limestone islands and the tour runs on suitable days. Wikipedia's climate table for Phuket shows the pattern: September is the wettest month, with 361.2 mm of rain over 22.1 days, and February the driest, with 23.9 mm. November still has 177.4 mm over 15.4 days.
Light rain does not cancel the tour, because the limestone islands shelter the bay. If the sea is unsafe, the operator moves the trip to another date or refunds it. The route and the order of the stops also change with the tide and the weather, and some caves can be entered only at certain tides. So the total is confirmed when you book, but the order of the afternoon is not fixed; read the tour schedule before you go.
