Short answer

On our tour, the James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay day from Phuket costs from $85 per person. That covers hotel pickup in Phuket, a speedboat with up to 35 guests and an English-speaking guide, sea canoeing at Hong Island with a paddler, lunch at Koh Panyee, drinks and fruit, snorkelling gear, the national park fee and accident insurance, so there is no park fee to pay on the day. We confirm the date, pickup time and total on WhatsApp before you pay. When you compare other prices, check the same lines.

01Our price is from $85 per person, and the national park fee, the guided canoe and lunch at Koh Panyee are inside it.
02A cheaper-looking offer may leave out the park fee, the canoe, lunch or the hotel transfer, so compare the lines, not the headline.
03We confirm the date, the pickup time and the total on WhatsApp before you pay.

How much does a James Bond Island tour from Phuket cost?

On our tour the price is from $85 per person. For that you get a full day in Phang Nga Bay: about 8.5 hours on the water, hotel pickup in Phuket between about 7:00 and 8:00 am, a speedboat to the bay and back at the pier at about 5:00 pm. It is a shared speedboat tour with sea canoeing, not a private charter. The word "from" means the starting price per person. We confirm the exact total for your date and group on WhatsApp before you pay.

That is the price of the whole day, not of one part of it. The speedboat takes up to 35 guests with an English-speaking guide, and the stops are Panak Island, James Bond Island with Ko Tapu, a cruise past mangroves, lunch at Koh Panyee, a guided sea canoe at Hong Island and a swim and snorkel at Khai Island. We do not retell the route here; our travel guide for this tour goes stop by stop.

What is included in the price?

Eight things sit inside the price: the round-trip hotel transfer in Phuket; the speedboat and the English-speaking guide; sea canoeing at Hong Island with a professional paddler; coffee and tea at the pier, soft drinks, water and fruit on board; lunch at Koh Panyee; snorkelling gear and a life jacket; the national park fee; and accident insurance. Nothing on that list is billed again once you are on the boat.

The two lines that matter most when you compare are the national park fee and the canoe. Both are the kind of item a low headline price can leave out. On our tour the Phang Nga Bay park fee is included, so you have no park fee to pay on the day, and the canoe is paddled for you by a professional paddler, so there is no separate charge for the canoe or the paddler either.

What do you still pay for yourself?

Nothing in the list above is charged a second time, but a few things stay with you. Towels are not included, so bring your own, with swimwear, sunscreen and a dry bag for your phone. Anything you buy for yourself is extra, such as souvenirs. Wikivoyage describes trinket vendors on the beach at James Bond Island, and the Thai newspaper Manager Online reported on 30 December 2023 that visitors stopped to buy gifts at Koh Panyee after lunch.

If you are comparing with a ticket that leaves the park fee out, add the fee to that price. The independent guide Thai National Parks gives the entry fee to Ao Phang Nga National Park as 300 baht for foreign adults and 150 baht for children aged 3 to 14, as of June 2022. Wikivoyage listed 300 baht and 100 baht for a child in July 2018. Neither is an official notice, and fees can change, so ask any operator what it charges.

Why some James Bond Island offers cost less and some more

The headline price depends on what is counted. Ask four questions of any offer: is the national park fee inside it, is the canoe inside it and who paddles, is lunch at Koh Panyee inside it, and is the hotel transfer inside it. Liz Price's 2011 paper on the hongs of Phang Nga Bay describes day trips on which a large boat takes tourists to the island and they then paddle single or double kayaks into the lagoons. A "canoe" can therefore mean paddling yourself; on our tour a professional paddler does it.

Distance and departure point matter too. Wikivoyage's guide to the park notes that tours booked from Krabi or Phuket are shorter and more expensive than tours arranged in Phang Nga town. Boat type and group size are the other differences, and we cover them in our comparison of speedboat and big-boat tours. We do not quote other operators' prices, because we cannot confirm them today.

Is it worth the price, and who should not book?

It is worth it if limestone scenery, sea caves and a village on stilts appeal to you more than a day on a beach. The day has six stops and a guided canoe, and the park fee is already paid. It is not for everyone. The speedboat is not suitable for pregnant women, infants under 1 year or guests over 70. James Bond Island also gets busy around midday, so the guide times that stop around the tide and the crowds.

If you mainly want to swim and snorkel from white beaches, compare it with a Phi Phi day. Our Phi Phi tour starts from $75 per person, but its park fee of 400 baht per adult and 200 per child is collected in cash on the tour, so the real gap is smaller than the two headline prices. The Phi Phi or James Bond Island comparison puts the two days side by side.

What can change the day, though not the price

The price stays the same, but the order of the day can move. Low tide can change the order of the stops or shorten the canoe route into the lagoon. Wikipedia gives the tides at Khao Phing Kan, the island in front of Ko Tapu, an amplitude of 2 to 3 metres, which makes some caves usable only at low tide. If the sea is unsafe, the operator moves the trip to another date or refunds it.

For what happens at each stop and what to pack, read the tour schedule. For the canoe itself, our guide to the Phang Nga Bay canoe tour explains the caves, the lagoons and why the tide decides the route. Neither changes what you pay; both help you decide whether the day suits your group.

How booking and payment work

Send us the date, your hotel in Phuket and the number of guests on WhatsApp. We confirm availability, the pickup time and the total before you pay, and how and when to pay is agreed with your booking. Pickup is between about 7:00 and 8:00 am depending on your hotel, and we confirm the exact time the day before.

Before you pay, check the total against the list in this article: pickup, park fee, canoe, lunch and insurance should all be inside it. If you travel with children, tell us their ages when you book, because infants under 1 year cannot join the speedboat. We confirm the exact pickup time the day before, so keep your phone close.

Practical checklist

  • Ask what any price includes: park fee, canoe, lunch at Koh Panyee and the hotel transfer.
  • Send your date, hotel and number of guests on WhatsApp and wait for the total before you pay.
  • Pack swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a hat and a dry bag for your phone; towels are not included.
  • Choose a sunscreen without oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-MBC or butylparaben.
  • Check the limits: no pregnant women, infants under 1 year or guests over 70.
  • Keep the day flexible: low tide can change the order of the stops.
