Short answer

Phuket works well with children if you plan around three things: the sun, the sea in the monsoon and the traffic. The calmest months are November to April, and Kata, Karon and Kamala are the usual family beaches. Phuket's mean daily maximum is between 31.8 and 34.4 degrees Celsius in every month. Our morning at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary suits all ages, our Phi Phi speedboat day takes children from 1 year old, and both are long days for toddlers.

Is Phuket good for children? Yes, with three things to plan for

Phuket 101's family guide, updated on 1 October 2026, says Phuket is much easier and safer with kids than most people imagine, with high hotel standards, many restaurants with children's menus, and modern hospitals with English-speaking doctors. It names the three things to watch: the strong sun, the sea during the monsoon, and the traffic. Take care of those three, the guide says, and Phuket is one of the easiest places in Asia to travel with children.

The same guide notes that children under five need extra attention around water, food hygiene and heat. Every child needs their own passport, it says, and each family member needs a Thai Digital Arrival Card, completed online before you fly; see our TDAC guide for the rules. Check the official page before you travel, since entry rules change.

When to go, and which beach

Phuket 101 calls November to April the easiest months for families: the sea is calm, waves are gentle, and children can swim on most west-coast beaches. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings stronger currents and red-flag days, so plan more pool time. Its top pick is Kata, where the water stays shallow a long way out, with Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Mai Khao as alternatives.

It also says which to avoid with young children: Patong can be overwhelming with jet skis and crowds, and Surin and Nai Harn have stronger currents and steeper drop-offs. For the beach-by-beach choice and the wind side, read our best beaches in Phuket guide, and our rip currents and red flags guide before anyone swims in the wet season.

Heat and sun: what the numbers say and what the NHS advises

The World Meteorological Organization's 1991–2020 normals for Phuket, as tabulated by Wikipedia, give a mean daily maximum between 31.8 and 34.4 degrees Celsius in every month, with March and April the hottest. So heat is not a seasonal problem; it is constant. Phuket 101 advises shade, plenty of water to prevent dehydration, a high-SPF sunscreen, and hats and rash vests for the beach and the pool.

The NHS says children's skin is much more sensitive than adult skin and advises shade when the sun is strongest, suitable clothing, a hat and at least SPF 30 sunscreen with at least 4-star UVA protection, reapplied straight after water and about every 2 hours. It says babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct strong sunlight. On marine national park trips, check the sunscreen label first; our reef-safe sunscreen guide explains why.

Water safety: the sea, the pool and the boat

The World Health Organization's drowning fact sheet, dated 1 May 2026, says children under 5 account for nearly a quarter of all drowning deaths, and that drowning is the fourth leading cause of death for children aged 1 to 4. In practice that means an adult within reach of every young child in water, at the pool too, whatever flotation they wear. Phuket 101 says the monsoon can make swimming unsafe from May to October.

For boat trips, Phuket 101 suggests bringing your own life jackets for children because child-sized vests are not always available on the boat. Our Phi Phi tour includes a mask, snorkel and life jacket for each guest, but we do not hold information on child sizes, so ask us before the day. The guide also says children should get proper training on snorkelling gear before they jump in the water.

Our tours and their age limits

Our morning at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary suits all ages. The sanctuary has electric golf cars with drivers for young children and a nursery at the Tree Top Lounge, and the canopy walkway is wheelchair accessible. The price, from $95 per person, is for guests aged 13 and over; ask us for the children's price. It takes 5 to 6 hours with transfers, and there is no riding, feeding or bathing, so the elephants are watched from a distance.

Our Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat tour is from $75 per person and takes children from 1 year old; infants under 1 year, pregnant women and guests over 70 cannot join. It lasts about 8.5 hours, the ride can be bumpy, and the national park fee is 200 baht per child and 400 per adult, paid in cash, as what the operator collects. Our Phi Phi with kids guide goes through it.

The sanctuary morning for small children: honest limits

A morning with elephants is gentler than a boat day, but it has its own demands. The shared van can collect you up to 90 minutes before the 9:30 start, depending on your hotel, and the sanctuary gives these drive times: Bang Tao and Cherngtalay about 30 minutes, Kamala and Phuket Town about 45, Patong about 55, Karon and Rawai about 1 hour, and the airport about 25. The van back leaves only when everyone has returned.

The programme runs in all weather with umbrellas, rain coats, boots and socks provided, though paths can be muddy. Lunch is vegetarian and vegan, so tell us about allergies when you book, and note that the sanctuary is often full one to two weeks ahead. We have no information on child seats in the van, so if you need one, ask first. Our ethical sanctuary guide explains what to look for.

Getting around, rain days and the indoor back-up

Phuket 101 says taxis rarely have child seats, so bring your own or book a private transfer that provides one, and it says not to put children on motorbikes. It recommends a car or van with a driver for the day. Our taxi and Grab prices guide covers the cost of rides from the main beaches.

For wet or very hot days, the guide lists Aquaria in Central Phuket, the Andamanda and Splash Jungle water parks, which open all year, and indoor play parks in the malls. Splash Jungle in Mai Khao is smaller and suits younger children, it says. Our rainy day guide has hours and prices, and the Sunday market and Old Town can wait for an evening after a nap.

  • Ask us about child-sized life jackets and child seats before booking any tour.
  • Send each child's age with your WhatsApp booking; we confirm the total before you pay.
  • Keep an indoor plan for the hottest or wettest day.
