The name 'Kwai' comes from the British saying khwae (Thai for a stream or river) as 'kwai'; the stretch of river under the bridge was renamed Khwae Yai in 1960. The bridge you walk on is mostly the one built in 1943: Allied air raids in 1945 destroyed parts of it, and the missing spans were replaced after the war with straight-edged ones supplied by Japan. At Erawan Falls the first tier is a few hundred metres from the visitor centre, and a golf cart to the first tiers costs 20 baht per person (as of June 2026); beyond the second tier food is not allowed. This guide covers the River Kwai Bridge & Erawan Falls Day Trip from Bangkok from the pickup to the last stop — the mood, the route and the tips guides mention in passing.
