Short answer

Thailand works well with children if you plan around heat, water and long days. Our speedboat tours take children from 1 year old, the Phuket elephant sanctuary morning suits all ages, and the Krabi 4 Islands day suits children from about 4. Plan the Andaman coast for December to March and Bangkok for November to February. Keep a close watch in the water: the World Health Organization says children under 5 account for nearly a quarter of all drowning deaths.

01Our speedboat tours take children from 1 year old; the Phuket elephant sanctuary morning suits all ages; the Krabi 4 Islands day suits children from about 4.
02Heat is the main planning issue: daytime highs run from 31 to 36 degrees across the year, and the NHS says children's skin is much more sensitive than adult skin.
03Adult supervision in the water matters more than any life jacket, according to the World Health Organization.

When to go with children

Choose the dry months. For Bangkok and the north that means November to February, when Bangkok has 1.0 to 3.8 rainy days a month on the 1991 to 2020 normals. For Phuket and Krabi it means December to March, when Phuket Airport records 32 to 117 mm of rain a month. For Koh Samui it means February to April. Our best time to visit Thailand guide has the numbers by region.

Heat is the constant. The normals give mean daily highs of 31 to 34 degrees at Phuket Airport in every month, 35.7 in Bangkok in April and 36.7 in Chiang Mai in April. The Thai Meteorological Department says April is the hottest month. With children, plan the active part of the day for the morning, keep the middle of the day for shade or a pool, and treat March to May as the hardest months.

Sun, heat and sunscreen

The NHS says children's skin is much more sensitive than adult skin, and recommends cover-up clothing, shade in the middle of the day and a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 with 4-star UVA protection. It advises applying sunscreen about 30 minutes before going out and again just before, and reapplying straight after being in the water even if the label says water resistant. Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct strong sunlight.

Check the label too. Thailand's national parks ban sunscreen containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor or butylparaben, with fines of up to 100,000 baht, under a Department of National Parks announcement that took effect in August 2021. That covers the island parks you will visit on a boat day. Our reef safe sunscreen guide explains how to read the ingredient list, and a rash top for each child reduces how much you need.

Water and the sea

The World Health Organization's fact sheet on drowning, dated 1 May 2026, says children under 5 account for nearly a quarter of all drowning deaths, that drowning is the fourth leading cause of death for children aged 1 to 4, and that the risk rises when children are in or near water without active adult supervision. On holiday that means one adult within reach of each young child in the water, whatever the life jacket, and not counting on a guide to watch your child.

The UK Foreign Office adds sea-specific warnings. Take care when swimming off coastal areas, especially in the monsoon, because people have drowned in strong riptides; Thailand has lifeguards at designated beaches and a flag system, so follow red flags. Jellyfish can come close to shore from May to October and stings can be fatal. Our speedboat tours include a life jacket, but the details we hold do not state child sizes, so ask us before the day.

Which of our tours suit which ages

The easiest day is the Phuket elephant sanctuary morning, which welcomes all ages. Our speedboat days are longer. The Phi Phi and Maya Bay tour and the James Bond Island canoe tour take children from 1 year old, but not infants under 1 year, pregnant women or guests over 70, and each day is about 8.5 hours. The Krabi 4 Islands day suits children from about 4 years.

On the Gulf side, our Pig Island day is described as one of the best family trips on Samui, with short boat rides and calm water, while the Ang Thong viewpoint climb is steep and hard for small children, who can stay on the beach. In Bangkok, children under 120 cm enter the Grand Palace and Wat Pho free, according to their official sites, but the temple tour is about 4 hours on foot in the heat. For the details of the Phi Phi day, read our guide for families.

Seasickness and long days

Our operators warn that speedboat rides can be bumpy in the open sea. For children the NHS advice is practical: sit in the middle of the boat, look at a fixed point such as the horizon, distract children by talking, listening to music or singing, and ask a pharmacist for a remedy. It says dissolvable tablets are available for children and patches are for adults and children over 10. Buy anything before the trip and read the age on the pack.

Long days are the other issue. Our boat days start with hotel pickup between about 7:00 and 8:30 am and finish at about 5:30 to 6 pm, and the Similan day is 12 to 13 hours door to door, with pickup as early as 5:30 am. For toddlers, put one big day in a week, with a free day either side. If a long boat day sounds too much, the elephant morning is 5 to 6 hours including transfers.

Health basics for families

The UK Foreign Office advises checking vaccinations and health risks at least 8 weeks before the trip, and lists dengue, malaria, rabies and Zika among the risks in Thailand. It gives the ambulance number as 1669, says all hospitals require a guarantee of payment before treating patients, and says private hospitals are of a high standard but can be expensive. Public hospitals do not always meet UK standards, particularly outside Bangkok.

That is the reason to take travel insurance that covers the whole family, including boat days and medical evacuation, and to carry the policy number on your phone. Mosquito spray is provided on our elephant sanctuary morning, and bringing your own for the rest of the trip is sensible. We are a tour company, not a medical adviser, so ask your own doctor or pharmacist about your children's needs.

The elephant sanctuary morning with children

Our Phuket elephant sanctuary morning is from $95 per person for guests aged 13 and over; ask us for the children's price when you book. The sanctuary welcomes all ages, has electric golf cars with drivers for families with young children and a nursery at the Tree Top Lounge. The canopy walkway is fully wheelchair accessible. There is no riding, feeding or bathing: since 1 April 2026 the sanctuary is hands-off, and you watch from a respectful distance.

The programme runs from 9:30 am to about 1:00 pm, and the shared van collects you between about 8:00 and 9:00 am, up to 90 minutes before the start. It runs in all weather, with boots, socks, umbrellas, rain coats and mosquito spray provided. Lunch is vegetarian and vegan, so tell us about allergies. The sanctuary is closed on 13 April and often full one to two weeks ahead, up to two weeks from November to April.

  • Tell us each child's age when you book, and ask about child-size life jackets and the children's price.
  • Check vaccinations 8 weeks ahead, and take travel insurance that covers the whole family.
