The short version: Phuket for choice, Krabi for a calmer base

Choose Phuket if you want the widest choice of beaches, hotels, nightlife and flights, and Krabi if you want limestone scenery and a calmer base with the islands on the doorstep. Phuket is Thailand's largest island: Wikipedia gives 543 square kilometres and Wikivoyage 48 km by 21 km, with most beaches on the west coast, Phuket Town in the south-east and the airport in the north. Krabi is a province with several bases, of which Ao Nang is the main one.

Wikivoyage's Krabi Province page draws the contrast: Krabi is less commercialised than Phuket, and many of its most beautiful beaches can only be reached by boat, so the villages behind them are far less urbanised. It also warns that Krabi is not undiscovered, because the main tourist areas cater to foreigners. Neither place is better in every way, so the real question is what you want to do each day. The sections below compare the practical things.

Size and airports: how you arrive

Phuket is the bigger gateway. Wikipedia, citing Airports of Thailand, gives 17.5 million passengers at Phuket International Airport in 2025, and the airport is about 32 km north of Phuket City. Krabi International Airport, about 7 km east of downtown Krabi according to Wikipedia, handled 3.1 million passengers in 2025, citing the Department of Airports. Wikivoyage says Phuket has very frequent flights from Bangkok and year-round direct flights from elsewhere in Asia, the Middle East, India and Australia.

From the airport to the beach the distances differ. In Krabi, Wikivoyage puts Ao Nang about 40 km from the airport and says the drive takes about 40 minutes. In Phuket it depends on the beach, because the island is 48 km long and the airport is at the north end. Our Phuket airport to Patong guide covers the most common transfer, and the Krabi airport to Ao Nang guide covers the other.

Beaches: Phuket's west coast against Krabi's boat-access coves

Phuket's beaches are developed and varied. Wikivoyage calls Patong the largest and most popular beach resort, known for its nightlife, Karon the second most developed beach, and Kamala a quieter beach north of Patong. If you want restaurants, bars and shops a short ride away, Phuket has more of them. Wikivoyage also says that from May to October mornings and afternoons are often sunny and clear but it tends to rain in the evenings, and water clarity goes down.

Krabi works differently. Railay and its neighbouring beaches have no road, and the islands are reached by speedboat or longtail from Ao Nang, according to Wikivoyage. Ao Nang is the town base, with Nopparat Thara as a quieter neighbour. Our Ao Nang or Railay comparison explains which base suits whom. In short, much of Krabi's scenery is reached by boat, while Phuket's beaches are reached by road.

Weather and season are almost the same

Both sit on the Andaman coast, and the Thai Meteorological Department's 1981 to 2010 table shows the same shape. At the Phuket station the driest months are February and January, with 23.9 and 30.3 mm of rain on average, and the wettest are September and October, with 361.2 and 320.1 mm. At the Krabi station January and February bring 32.0 and 43.4 mm, September 275.2 mm and October 323.5 mm.

Annual totals are 2,219.5 mm for Phuket and 1,998.8 mm for Krabi, so neither is a drier choice. Wikivoyage's Krabi Province page gives November to April as the best time to visit Krabi, and says the sea stays warm all year. That means your dates will not choose between the two for you. They will decide how many boat days you can count on, and our guides to Phuket in September and Krabi in rainy season cover what to expect.

Day trips from each, with our prices

Phuket's boat days are longer and go further. On our site the Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat day is from $75 per person for about 8.5 hours, with about an hour on the water from Royal Phuket Marina. The James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay day is from $85 for about 8.5 hours, and the Similan Islands day is from $105 for 12 to 13 hours door to door, open from 15 October to 14 May. Our Phuket boat tour comparison sets them side by side.

Krabi's days are shorter and cheaper. The 4 Islands tour is from $35 per person, about 6 hours from pickup and back at about 2:00 pm, and the Hong Islands day is from $40 and back at about 3:30 pm. The park fee is paid in cash: 200 baht per adult on the 4 Islands and 300 on the Hong Islands. Phi Phi can be reached from either side: Wikivoyage says it is 40 to 50 minutes by speedboat from Ao Nang. Our 4 Islands or Hong Islands guide helps you pick.

What it costs: compare like with like

Prices on the ground are hard to compare from guidebooks. Wikivoyage describes Ao Nang's price level as comparable to Phuket, so do not assume Krabi is cheap. What we can compare is our own day trips: from $35 to $40 in Krabi against from $75 to $105 for the Phuket boat days. The trips are different lengths, 6 to 8 hours in Krabi and 8.5 to 13 hours from Phuket, and they visit different places, so the gap is not a like-for-like price difference.

Check what each price includes. On our James Bond Island and Similan days the national park fee is in the price. On our Krabi days it is extra, in cash. On our Phi Phi day the operator collects 400 baht per adult and 200 per child in cash, which we give as what the operator collects, not as an official rate. The Phi Phi price guide and the Krabi 4 Islands price guide list what is and is not included.

Can you do both, and who should pick which?

Yes, with a transfer day. Wikivoyage says ferries run from Rassada Port in Phuket Town to Krabi Province twice a day, taking 90 to 120 minutes, and its Krabi Province page puts Phuket two hours away. That makes a split trip realistic, for example a few nights on each coast. Our Phuket to Krabi guide compares the ferry and the road.

If you have to choose, pick Phuket for nightlife, a wide choice of beaches and long boat days to the Similans or Phang Nga Bay. Pick Krabi for a quieter base, limestone scenery and short island days. One limit of our Krabi tour: there is no pickup from Phuket, Koh Lanta or Phi Phi, so you need to be staying in Ao Nang or the Krabi area, or on Railay or Tonsai, and it is not recommended for infants under 4.

Practical checklist

  • Decide whether you want nightlife and choice (Phuket) or a quieter base with limestone scenery (Krabi).
  • Check the season: both coasts are wettest in September and October and driest in January and February.
  • For the Similan Islands, plan to travel between 15 October and mid-May and base yourself in Phuket or Khao Lak.
  • Keep cash for the Krabi park fee on the day: 200 baht per adult on the 4 Islands, 300 on the Hong Islands.
  • If you want both coasts, allow a transfer day: the ferry takes 90 to 120 minutes.
