What Fisherman's Village is

Fisherman's Village is the traditional core of Bophut, a beach village on the north-east shore of Koh Samui. Wikivoyage says it is one of the few places on Samui that keeps some of the island's original Thai-Chinese atmosphere, and describes old Chinese shophouses along a narrow street, many converted into restaurants, cafes and small shops. The village sits at the east end of the beach, with newer development to the west.

Wikivoyage adds that there has been a conscious effort in Bophut to keep out the more commercial parts of Thai nightlife, aiming instead at couples and young families, and that the village has no girlie bars. That makes it a quieter evening than Chaweng. If you want a bar-street night out instead, see our guide to Lamai or Chaweng.

The Friday walking street: when and what

Pelago's guide to Samui night markets, last updated on 1 December 2025, lists the Fisherman's Village Walking Street on Bophut Beach Road with opening hours of every Friday evening. It gives no times, and we could not confirm them from an official source, so ask your hotel on the day. The guide says other Samui markets run on other days, for example the Chaweng Walking Street from Thursday to Saturday.

The same guide describes stalls selling grilled prawns, fish curries, pla pao, tom yum goong and other street food, with street performances in front of the old pier and live music. It also says some stalls sell imitation handbags, watches and sunglasses, so look at what you are buying. Wikipedia lists Fisherman's Village among the most popular night markets on the island, together with the Wharf and Plaza the Green night market.

Eating there: seafood and prices

Wikivoyage's Bophut page says some 30 bars and restaurants stand in little more than 700 m of village street, French, Italian, barbecue, Indian and seafood outlets among them, and that Bophut has a reputation as one of the best places to eat on Samui. It describes one Thai seafood restaurant where most fish cost 50 baht per 100 grams, a few hundred baht per head. That entry is undated, so treat the number as an example, not a price list.

The rule is to ask before you order. Wikivoyage's Koh Samui guide says dual pricing is common, that some restaurants have two menus, and that you should always check prices and the menu first so you do not argue when the bill arrives. It says main courses in a standard low-key Thai restaurant should be under 100 baht, except some seafood dishes, so if prices seem unreasonably steep, head elsewhere. When fish is sold by weight, have it weighed and priced before it is cooked.

The beach and the weather

Bophut's beach is about 2 km of white sand fringed by coconut palms, according to Wikivoyage, and the calm bay makes it a place for playing or relaxing more than swimming, because the water is often murky, especially around December. The beach is quite narrow and drops off rapidly. Jet ski hire operators are at the west end of the village. The UK Foreign Office says never to hand over your passport as a guarantee to jet-ski rental businesses.

Weather decides the evening. Wikipedia says the heaviest rain on Samui falls from mid October to early December, though showers elsewhere in the year typically last 20 to 60 minutes. On a Friday in that window, check the forecast, carry a light rain jacket and have a plan for the walk back. Our guide to Koh Samui in December covers what the sea and sky are doing then.

Getting there and getting back

Wikivoyage says Bophut is 15 minutes from the airport by bus or taxi. Wikipedia puts the Big Buddha temple 3 km east of Bophut, so the two fit into one trip; see our guide to the Big Buddha. For taxi, minibus and songthaew fares from the airport, see our airport to Chaweng guide, which explains why published fares differ.

Getting back is the part to plan. Wikivoyage says songthaews run fixed routes at fixed prices until 18:00, from 20 to 80 baht depending on distance, and that after 18:00 they act as normal taxis and the price must be agreed first. On a Friday night that means a negotiated fare. Ask your hotel what the fare to your beach should be, and agree it before you get in, as Wikivoyage advises.

Is Bophut a good base?

It suits couples and families who want restaurants within walking distance and a calmer evening. Wikivoyage's Koh Samui guide describes Bophut as known for its Fisherman's Village, laid-back but growing fast, and says Choeng Mon and Mae Nam are quieter beaches nearby. Pelago says a taxi from Chaweng Beach to the nearby Wharf market takes about 20 minutes, so Chaweng's choice is not far away.

Bophut is also a hotel pickup area for our boat days, so you do not need to travel to a pier. The beach itself is not the reason to choose it: given the murky water Wikivoyage describes, many visitors swim elsewhere on a boat day or at a clearer beach. If swimming matters most, compare the options in our Lamai or Chaweng guide and in things to do in Koh Samui.

Pairing the walking street with a boat day

A Friday market pairs well with a short boat day. Our Pig Island tour is from $50 per person for the speedboat option, which takes about 5 to 6 hours in total, including a round-trip hotel transfer from Bophut, Mae Nam, Choeng Mon, Bang Rak, Chaweng, Chaweng Noi or Lamai. You snorkel at Koh Tan and spend free time on Pig Island. We confirm the pickup time on WhatsApp the day before.

The pigs are animals living on the island: no chasing or riding, and feed them only what the guide allows. Non-swimmers can join, because life jackets are provided and you can stay in the shallow water. The tour is not wheelchair accessible and is not recommended for travellers with back problems or prone to seasickness. If the sea is unsafe, the operator moves the trip to another date or refunds it. Read our Pig Island guide for the ethics question.

Practical checklist

  • Ask your hotel to confirm the Friday walking street hours on the day: we could not confirm them officially.
  • Arrive early in the evening and check what you are buying: some stalls sell imitation goods.
  • Ask the price of seafood by weight, and the menu price, before you order.
  • Agree the taxi or songthaew fare home before you get in, because fixed fares apply only until 18:00.
  • In October to early December, check the forecast and carry a light rain jacket.
