Short answer
Choose Chaweng if you want the widest choice of restaurants, bars and dive shops, and a beach about 2 km from the airport. Choose Lamai if you want a slower base with better swimming at its quieter ends. Wikivoyage describes Chaweng as Samui's largest, most developed beach, with about 7 km of sand, and Lamai as its second beach, south of Chaweng. Neither is quiet in its centre, so the end of the beach you pick matters more than the name. Both are pickup areas for our day trips.
Chaweng for choice and nightlife, Lamai for a slower base
Choose Chaweng if you want the widest choice of restaurants, bars, shops and dive shops within walking distance, and a beach close to the airport. Choose Lamai if you want a smaller, slower base with good swimming at its quiet ends. Wikivoyage's Koh Samui guide calls Chaweng the largest and most developed beach on the island, and Lamai its second beach, south of Chaweng.
Where your hotel sits on the beach matters more than the name. Wikivoyage says Chaweng divides into north, central and Chaweng Noi sections, and that Lamai's southern third has the widest strip of sand while its north is quieter. If peace is your priority, Wikivoyage suggests the northern beaches of Mae Nam, Bophut and Choeng Mon instead. We found no reliable 2026 source for hotel prices, so we do not compare them here.
The beaches: sand, swimming and waves
Wikivoyage's Chaweng page describes a beach of about 7 km of powdery white sand, bordered by a coral reef where the waves break, which leaves the bay quite peaceful. It says the beach is usually reached through hotels because no beach road runs behind it, and that the central part is more crowded than the quieter north. Two small islands lie near the reef.
Lamai is different. Wikivoyage says its southern third has the widest strip of sand and is the best for swimming, but is known for strong waves and occasional rip currents, and that the far end near Hin Ta and Hin Yai is much quieter. It adds that Hed Thongthakien, also called Crystal Bay or Silver Beach, just beyond North Lamai, is acclaimed as the best swimming beach on Samui. Ask your hotel about the day's currents before you swim.
Nightlife and noise
Chaweng has the island's biggest night scene. Wikivoyage says its nightlife is especially lively at the north end, and that the strip is swamped with hotels, pubs and go-go bars. Its Koh Samui page says the official closing time in entertainment zones is 01:00, though in practice it is usually between 01:00 and 02:00. The UK Foreign Office says alcohol sales are restricted between midnight and 11 am, except in licensed hotels and authorised entertainment venues.
Lamai is a smaller version. Wikivoyage says Lamai has a significant number of girlie bars along the main street, most common in the south of the town, while the north is virtually free of them, and that Old Lamai, near the McDonald's sign, has French eateries and bars and is more relaxed than the busy tourist core. If you have an early boat, choose the north end of either beach, away from the main bar streets.
Food, shops and getting around
Chaweng has the most to choose from. Wikivoyage says the middle of the strip holds Samui's greatest concentration of restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, fast food and convenience stores, and that most Samui dive shops are based there. In Lamai the same guide points to the public market behind the gas station near Old Lamai for cheap meals, and to cafes and bakeries along the strip south of the temple corner.
Chaweng is also closer to the airport: Wikipedia says the airport is roughly 2 km north of it. Wikivoyage's Lamai page quotes about 150 baht per person for a minibus between Lamai and the airport and 300 to 400 baht for a private taxi, which are undated figures. Our airport to Chaweng guide shows how fares are quoted. Songthaews run fixed daytime fares of 20 to 80 baht, according to Wikivoyage.
What is close by: rocks, temples and the Big Buddha
Lamai has sights within a short ride. Wikivoyage lists Hin Ta and Hin Yai, the Grandfather and Grandmother rocks at the south end of Lamai Beach, where viewing is free, and Wat Lamai, whose cultural hall holds a 2,000-year-old metal ceremonial drum. It places Wat Khunaram, with its mummified monk, past Hua Thanon towards Na Mueang. Chaweng is the base for trips to Ko Tao and Ang Thong, and most dive shops are there.
Wikipedia puts the Big Buddha temple 7.5 km north-west of Chaweng, on the airport side of the island. Wikivoyage says the island can be circled in just a couple of hours by motorbike or car, so neither beach cuts you off. See our guides to Na Muang waterfall, the Big Buddha and things to do in Koh Samui.
Day trips from either beach
Both beaches are pickup areas for our Ang Thong Marine Park tour, from $50 per person. The operator's pickup covers Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Mae Nam, Bang Rak, Choeng Mon and Nathon, between about 7:30 and 8:30 am, and the speedboat leaves a pier in the north of the island at about 9:00. Lamai is on the south-east coast, so its pickup may be earlier than Chaweng's; we confirm the time for your hotel when you book.
On our tour the national park is closed to visitors from 1 November to 15 December 2026, and the tour runs before and after those dates. The park fee is paid on the day and is not in the price. The viewpoint climb is steep, with ropes, and takes about 15 minutes. In the closed weeks, our Pig Island tour also picks up in Chaweng and Lamai, and our Koh Tao day trip includes hotel pickup on Samui.
Season, safety and who should pick which
Weather affects both beaches. Wikipedia says the heaviest rain on Samui falls from mid October to early December, and Wikivoyage says January and February are the best months. Wikipedia also says Samui and Koh Phangan have had the highest incidence of jellyfish-related deaths in Thailand, and the UK Foreign Office says jellyfish can swim close to the shore, particularly from May to October, so take local advice from your hotel before you swim.
Chaweng suits groups, first-time visitors and anyone who wants nightlife, with the airport close by. Lamai suits travellers who want a slower beach town, with the quieter north end and the swimming at Crystal Bay. Families can also look at Choeng Mon, which Wikivoyage calls quiet and family-friendly, or Mae Nam, where it says the shallow water suits children. Whichever you pick, your boat days start from the hotel.
Practical checklist
- Pick the end of the beach first: north Chaweng or Chaweng Noi, north Lamai or the south end near Hin Ta and Hin Yai.
- If you want nightlife, stay near the Chaweng strip; if you want early nights, choose the north end of either beach.
- Ask your hotel about currents and jellyfish before you swim, especially at Lamai's southern end.
- Check the Ang Thong park closure, 1 November to 15 December 2026, before you plan that day trip.
- Send your hotel's name when you book a day trip so we can confirm the pickup time.
