Short answer

Samui airport is roughly 2 km north of Chaweng, a short ride. Published fares for an airport taxi to Chaweng range from 300 to 500 baht depending on the source and the date, a shared minibus is quoted at 120 to 200 baht per person, and Wikivoyage says taxis rarely use their meters, so agree the price before you ride. The airport's own website says public songthaews also run from the airport. Many hotels arrange transfers. Fares change, so check the price at the counter before you go.

01Samui airport is roughly 2 km from Chaweng, so the ride is short; the question is only the price.
02Published fares disagree: an airport taxi is quoted at 300 to 500 baht, and a shared minibus at 120 to 200 baht per person.
03Taxis rarely use meters, so confirm the fare at the counter or with your hotel before you get in.

How far is Chaweng from the airport?

Not far. Wikipedia says Samui airport is roughly 2 km north of Chaweng, the island's largest resort centre, and Wikivoyage's Chaweng page calls it a few minutes' ride south of the airport. A 2026 guide on a flight-deals website gives about 10 minutes by taxi and about 20 minutes by shared minibus, which stops at several hotels. The airport is in the Bo Phut subdistrict, in the north-east of the island.

Where you end up in Chaweng matters. Wikivoyage says the beach is about 7 km long and divides into North Chaweng, Central Chaweng and Chaweng Noi, around a headland to the south. A hotel at the south end of the strip is a longer ride than one in the north. Tell the driver the name of your hotel, not just the word Chaweng, and check which end it is on before you set off.

Airport taxi: what the fares are quoted at

Published figures for the airport taxi to Chaweng do not agree. Wikivoyage's Chaweng page gives 400 baht if you book at the airport's transport desk. Its Koh Samui page, updated in February 2023, says a taxi directly to your destination may cost 500 baht. A taxi-rate website, which carries no date, lists 300 baht for a standard taxi and 500 baht for a van, and the flight-deals guide above gives a fixed 500 baht paid at a counter inside the terminal.

Read that as a range of 300 to 500 baht and confirm the price at the counter. Wikivoyage warns that many drivers refuse to use the meter, and advises agreeing the fare before you get into the taxi; its Chaweng page says a negotiated fare away from the desk should be 200 to 400 baht. A fixed price paid at the desk and shown on a slip is simpler than a bargain on the kerb, especially after a long flight.

Shared minibus: cheaper, slower

A shared minibus costs less per person and takes longer. Wikivoyage's Chaweng page gives 120 baht per person for a shared van that usually needs five passengers before it leaves, while its Koh Samui page gives around 200 baht for the 20-minute ride, and says it may take longer if the van drops at several hotels. The flight-deals guide quotes about 130 baht per person. Those figures span several years, so ask the counter.

The airport's own website lists a SmackOne counter on its car rental and limousine page, with a booking line and an address at the airport, and the flight-deals guide names SmackOne as a shared-minibus operator. The airport page does not list fares. A shared van suits one or two travellers with light luggage. If you are a family of four with bags, a taxi at 300 to 500 baht can cost about the same as four minibus seats.

Songthaew and ride-hailing

The airport's website said on 10 March 2026 that passengers can use the Samui local public bus, the songthaew, from the airport to destinations on the island, and called it convenient and economical. Wikivoyage says songthaews run fixed routes at fixed prices until 18:00, from 20 to 80 baht depending on distance, and that after 18:00 they act as ordinary taxis and the price must be agreed first. Wikipedia adds that they circle the ring road mostly in the daytime.

A songthaew may stop to pick up more people, so it is slow with luggage. Wikivoyage's Koh Samui page, updated in February 2023, says NaviGo and Grab ride-hailing are available at the airport with fixed prices, but we could not confirm a current fare from an official source. If you want a fixed price without bargaining, compare a ride-hailing quote with the counter price while you wait for your bags.

Hotel transfers and the timeshare touts

Ask your hotel first. Wikivoyage says many larger hotels and resorts include free airport transfers, but you need to book them in advance, and its Chaweng page says a hotel transfer usually costs about 300 baht, with some higher-end hotels quoting 400 baht per person. A pre-booked driver with your name on a sign removes the haggling and the wait.

Be wary of offers in the arrivals hall. Wikivoyage's Koh Samui page says couples and families may be approached by young women holding signs for higher-end hotels, who offer a free taxi ride if you promise to attend a timeshare presentation during your stay. A free ride that costs you a morning of your holiday is not free. Walk on to the official counters, and say no politely.

Boats near the airport

If your plan includes a boat, the airport is close to one pier. Seatran Discovery calls Bangrak Pier, also called Big Buddha Pier, a 10-minute drive from the airport, and Wikipedia says the airport is near the Big Buddha pier where ferries leave for Koh Phangan. Wikipedia places Maenam Beach Pier, where the high-speed ferries to Koh Tao leave, about 6 km north-west of the airport.

Our guides cover both routes. See Koh Samui to Koh Phangan for the piers and fares, and Koh Samui to Koh Tao for the ferry against a day trip. If you only want a day on the water, a tour with hotel pickup avoids the pier question altogether.

Your first morning: how our Pig Island trip picks you up

Once you are in Chaweng, a boat day needs no taxi. Our Pig Island snorkelling tour is from $50 per person and includes a round-trip hotel transfer in Mae Nam, Bophut, Choeng Mon, Bang Rak, Chaweng, Chaweng Noi and Lamai. Hotels on steep hills meet at a point nearby. On our tour the pickup time is confirmed on WhatsApp the day before, so you only need to tell us your hotel.

The speedboat option takes about 5 to 6 hours in total: you board in the south of Samui, snorkel at Koh Tan and spend free time on Pig Island, where the pigs walk the beach. The island day at $65 adds the Heaven Gate viewpoint, lunch and elephants. It is not wheelchair accessible and is not recommended for travellers with back problems or prone to seasickness. We confirm the total before you pay.

Practical checklist

  • Tell the driver your hotel's name and which end of Chaweng it is on.
  • Expect 300 to 500 baht for a taxi and 120 to 200 baht per person for a shared minibus, and confirm the price at the counter.
  • Agree the fare before you get in, because taxis rarely use meters.
  • Ask your hotel about a pre-booked transfer; larger resorts may include one.
  • Walk past touts offering a free taxi in exchange for a timeshare presentation.
