Short answer
Thailand suits older travellers who plan for heat, walking and the sea. On our tours the Phi Phi, James Bond Island and Similan speedboat days do not take guests over 70, so older travellers should look at calmer land days: the Phuket elephant sanctuary morning has golf cars and a wheelchair-accessible walkway, and our Bangkok and Chiang Mai days list no upper age. Travel from November to February, start early and keep travel insurance that covers hospital care, which the UK Foreign Office says can be expensive.
Which of our tours have an age limit
The limit is on the boat. The Phi Phi and Maya Bay tour, the James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay tour and the Similan Islands day are shared speedboat days, and all three are not suitable for pregnant women, infants under 1 year or guests over 70. Our details also say the Phi Phi ride can be bumpy in the open sea and that guests with back problems should consider a bigger boat. Tell us every guest's exact age when you book, and we confirm before you plan the day.
A limit on the boat is not a limit on the holiday. Land days have no upper age in our details, though some have conditions: the Krabi 4 Islands tour lists no upper age but is not recommended for people with back or neck problems, and the Koh Tao day is not suitable for guests with back problems or heart conditions. Our guide to Phuket boat tours for seniors explains the speedboat rule in detail.
Heat is the main health issue
Thailand is hot in every month. The 1991 to 2020 normals give mean daily highs of 31 to 34 degrees Celsius at Phuket Airport all year, 35.7 in Bangkok in April and 36.7 in Chiang Mai in April, and the Thai Meteorological Department says upper Thailand often reaches near 40 from March to May. The World Health Organization's fact sheet of July 2026 says heat can worsen underlying illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, and that heat-related deaths among people over 65 worldwide rose by about 85 per cent between 2000 to 2004 and 2017 to 2021.
The NHS advice for hot weather is simple: drink more cold drinks, wear light-coloured loose clothing, avoid the sun between 11 am and 3 pm and avoid too much alcohol. Plan around it. Travel from November to February, when Bangkok has 1.0 to 3.8 rainy days a month and daytime highs of 32 to 34 degrees, do the outdoor part of the day in the morning, and rest indoors at midday. This is advice from the sources, not medical advice, so ask your own doctor.
Walking, steps and temples
Temple days mean walking and heat together. Our Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun tour is about 4 hours, mostly outdoors and on foot, starting at about 8:30 am, with a ferry across the river. Shoes come off before the religious buildings at Wat Pho, so wear shoes that slip off easily. The Ayutthaya day trip is about 9 hours with a lot of walking in the sun, and temple clothes must cover shoulders and knees.
If that is too much, the Phuket half-day city tour is from $25 per person and 4 to 5 hours, in an air-conditioned car or minivan with hotel pickup between about 8:00 and 9:00 am. It stops at Karon Viewpoint, the Big Buddha for 45 to 60 minutes, Wat Chalong and the Old Town, each for 15 to 60 minutes. Ask us whether your date includes a shopping stop, as many city tours do, and buy only if you want to.
Calmer days that suit older travellers
The gentlest day on our list is the Phuket elephant sanctuary morning, from $95 per person. It is suitable for all ages, has electric golf cars with drivers for young children and for guests in wheelchairs, and the 500-metre canopy walkway is fully wheelchair accessible. Ask us whether a guest who cannot walk far can use a golf car. There is no riding, feeding or bathing, and you watch from a distance. The programme runs from 9:30 am to about 1:00 pm in all weather, with a vegetarian lunch, and the shared van collects you between about 8:00 and 9:00 am.
In Chiang Mai the Thai cooking class is from $30 for about 6.5 hours, with hotel pickup within about 3 km of the Old City. On Koh Samui the Ang Thong viewpoint climb is steep, about 15 minutes with ropes, and our details say older guests can stay on the beach; Pig Island is not wheelchair accessible and not recommended for travellers with back problems or prone to seasickness. If a stop worries you, ask us what the tour page says.
Insurance, hospitals and medicines
The UK Foreign Office says to check that your destination can provide the healthcare you may need and that your travel insurance covers local treatment or medical evacuation, which it calls particularly important if you have a health condition. It says all hospitals require a guarantee of payment before treating patients, that private hospitals are of a high standard but can be expensive, and that public hospitals and clinics do not always meet UK standards, particularly outside Bangkok. The ambulance number is 1669.
On medicines, the Foreign Office says the legal status of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can differ in Thailand, and points to the TravelHealthPro guidance on travelling with medicines. It also says to check vaccinations and health risks at least 8 weeks before the trip, and that Bangkok and Chiang Mai can have high air pollution, with seasonal smoke from burning that may worsen bronchial, sinus or asthma conditions. That is a reason to check the daily air reading in Chiang Mai, where the National Environment Board's pollution control period runs from February to May, according to Thairath.
Pace, timing and how to book
Keep days short and mornings early. Our Phuket tours collect you between about 7:00 and 8:30 am, and the sanctuary van between about 8:00 and 9:00 am. Put a free day between active days, and keep the last day free of tours. In the cool months the Andaman coast is driest from December to March and the north from November to January, so a trip that follows the dry window is also the easiest on the body.
The James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay tour is from $85 per person and is the speedboat day to consider if everyone in your group is under 70: you sit in the canoe and a professional paddler does the work, and the national park fee is included. Send us the date, your hotel and every guest's age on WhatsApp, and we confirm availability and tell you if a guest is outside the limits before you pay.
Practical checklist
- Check every guest's age against the over-70 limit on our speedboat days before you book.
- Travel from November to February, do outdoor activities in the morning and rest indoors at midday.
- Wear light, loose clothing, carry water and avoid the sun between 11 am and 3 pm.
- Buy travel insurance that covers local hospital care and medical evacuation, and keep the policy number on your phone.
- Take enough of your regular medicines in their original packaging, and check the rules for each with your doctor.
Questions and answers
Is there an age limit on your Phuket boat tours?
Yes. Our Phi Phi, James Bond Island and Similan speedboat days are not suitable for guests over 70, pregnant women or infants under 1 year. Tell us every guest's exact age when you book.
Is Thailand safe for older travellers?
It can be, with planning. The main issues the sources name are heat, walking distances, the sea and hospital costs. The UK Foreign Office says private hospitals are of a high standard but expensive, so insurance matters.
What is the best time of year for seniors to visit Thailand?
November to February for Bangkok and the north, and December to March for Phuket and Krabi. Daytime highs in Bangkok are 32 to 34 degrees in those months, against 35.7 in April.
Which tours are best for people who cannot walk far?
The Phuket elephant sanctuary morning is suitable for all ages, with golf cars and a wheelchair-accessible canopy walkway. The Phuket half-day city tour is done by car, with short stops. Ask us about your group's needs.
Can I bring my prescription medicines to Thailand?
The UK Foreign Office says hospitals and pharmacies usually accept UK prescriptions, but the legal status of some medicines can differ. Check the TravelHealthPro guidance and ask your doctor before you travel.
