Short answer
Stay in Jomtien if the beach and a quieter evening matter most, and on Pattaya Beach if you want restaurants and nightlife within walking distance. Jomtien is about 3 km south of Pattaya, according to Wikipedia, and Wikivoyage calls it a quieter suburb with ocean-view rooms for less and swimming zones marked by buoys. Pattaya Beach is about 3 km of narrow, busy sand beside Beach Road. Both had water-quality scares reported in 2026, so check local notices before you swim.
Which is better, Jomtien or Pattaya Beach?
Neither is better; they suit different trips. Wikivoyage's Jomtien page calls Jomtien a quieter suburb of Pattaya where you can find accommodation with an ocean view for less, and says it has fewer tourist attractions, so traffic and tour-bus numbers are much lower. Its Pattaya page says Jomtien Beach is more popular with families. Pattaya Beach is the city beach, beside the hotels, malls and Beach Road.
The simple rule: choose Jomtien if you will spend most of the day at the beach and want to sleep somewhere calmer, and choose central Pattaya if you want restaurants, shops, the pier for boats and nightlife within walking distance. Wikipedia puts Jomtien about 3 kilometres south of Pattaya, so you can stay in one and visit the other for the price of a short baht-bus ride.
How do the two beaches differ?
Pattaya Beach is about 3 km long and runs alongside the city, bordered by Beach Road, according to Wikivoyage. It describes a relatively narrow strip of sand that is crowded at the best of times and more so at high tide, lined with deck chairs and umbrellas and worked by vendors selling everything from food to massage. It adds that hefty fines for littering help keep the sand tidy, but that the sea is not so clean.
Jomtien Beach stretches about 5 kilometres in Wikivoyage's Jomtien guide and about 6 kilometres in its Pattaya guide, so the sources do not agree on the length, but both say it is much longer. Wikivoyage says it has a tree-shaded beach walk, sections reserved for swimmers by strings of buoys to keep motorised water sports away, and parasols and beach chairs. Wikipedia says Jomtien is popular for swimming and windsurfing, with jet skis, parasailing and scuba diving.
What about water quality and swimming?
Check before you swim, at either beach. Pattaya Mail reported on 4 February 2026 that initial inspections on 2 February found water quality at a poor level near Jomtien Beach Soi 14, after a contractor released wastewater into the sea. By 3 February the city's tests showed conditions back to normal, and tourists were seen swimming again; authorities had advised visitors to avoid swimming in the meantime and said legal action had been taken against the contractor.
On 21 February 2026 Pattaya Mail reported that Na Jomtien officials said a structure on the shoreline was a treatment pond, that dark water came during heavy rain, and that salinity and clarity were within normal standards. Those are the authorities' statements. We found no current official bathing-water grade for Pattaya Beach or Jomtien, so we cannot rank them. If the water looks discoloured or smells wrong, follow any posted notice or use a hotel pool that day.
Where is it better to stay?
Stay on or near Pattaya Beach if you want to walk to dinner, Walking Street, the shopping centres and the pier. Wikipedia describes Walking Street as an entertainment and red-light district that is closed to vehicles in the evening, from 19:00 to 03:00, while Wikivoyage gives 18:00 to 02:00, so the exact hours vary. On 7 April 2026 the Tourist Police held a meeting there after viral videos of venue security guards using excessive force. If you want quiet nights, choose a hotel away from it.
Stay in Jomtien for a calmer base, particularly if you travel with children or plan long beach days. Wikivoyage says rooms with an ocean view cost less there, and that it is 10 minutes from South Pattaya by motorbike taxi over the hill along Thappraya Road. For an even quieter beach north of Pattaya Beach, Wikivoyage says Naklua's beaches, including Wong Amat, are generally cleaner and better for quiet relaxation than Pattaya Beach. We found no dated hotel prices to compare.
What about beach chairs, vendors and the rules?
Expect to be offered chairs at both. Wikivoyage describes acres of sand packed with deck chairs and umbrellas on Pattaya Beach, with hawkers selling food, massages and souvenirs. Pattaya Mail reported on 27 October 2026 that city enforcement officers keep inspecting Pattaya Beach and seizing mats and chairs that operators rent to tourists from public space in breach of city regulations, and that the practice keeps returning. Ask where rentals are permitted and agree the price first.
On Koh Larn, by contrast, Pattaya Mail's 2026 guide gives chairs and sunbeds as about 100 to 200 baht, and notes some restaurants waive the charge if you order food or drinks. We found no dated price for chairs on Pattaya Beach or Jomtien. A simple habit helps on any of these beaches: bring a towel and sunscreen, carry small notes, and be clear before you sit down whether the chair is free with a drink.
How do you get around, and what about the airport?
The baht bus, the blue songthaew, links everything. Wikivoyage says the fare is usually 10 baht for trips within Pattaya and is the same for locals and foreigners, and that for Jomtien the songthaews wait at the beginning of Pratumnak Road near the school and head south over the hill. It warns against telling the driver your destination, because that can be treated as a private hire at a much higher fare. Wikipedia gives 10 baht for shorter distances and 20 for north Pattaya and beyond.
From Suvarnabhumi Airport, Wikivoyage lists a government bus 389 at 143 baht, running hourly, with a stop at the bus station in Jomtien; that figure is from December 2023 and January 2024, so check it. Wikipedia puts Jomtien about 120 km and one and a half hours by road from Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao airport about 50 minutes away. Our Bangkok to Pattaya guide compares the ways of arriving.
Which suits families, couples and nightlife?
Families usually get on better in Jomtien, according to Wikivoyage, which says Jomtien Beach is more popular with families and has an amusement park and tower to keep children busy. Its Jomtien page names Dongtan Beach, north of the police box at the end of Thappraya Road, as frequented mostly by families and, in one section, the LGBT community. If you plan day activities with children, our guide to Pattaya with kids covers them.
Couples and groups who want an evening out will find Pattaya Beach and the Walking Street area easier, as long as you are comfortable with the nature of that area. If you want both, base yourself in one and spend an evening in the other; a baht bus is cheap, and the last ride back is the only thing to check. Does your base matter for our Koh Larn tour?
Our Koh Larn Coral Island tour is from $25 per person and lasts about 6 hours. You meet at the marina on Pattaya Beach Road at about 9:00 am, or ask for pickup from your hotel, which is available in the operator's service area; outside it a private car costs extra. So tell us your hotel when you book, especially if you stay in Jomtien or Na Jomtien, and we will say whether it is inside the pickup area.
The public ferry leaves from Bali Hai Pier at the southern end of Pattaya Beach Road, just beyond Walking Street, according to Pattaya Mail, which is another point in favour of a base near the Pattaya end of the bay. Our price covers the speedboat, a guide, snorkelling gear, a paddle board and bottled water; lunch is not included. See the tour schedule for the times, and our guide to Koh Larn's beaches.
Practical checklist
- Choose Jomtien for a quieter base and long beach days, or central Pattaya for restaurants and nightlife on foot.
- Check local notices and the water before you swim, at either beach.
- Carry 10-baht coins for the baht bus and do not tell the driver your destination.
- Ask where beach chairs may be rented and agree the price before you sit.
- Tell us your hotel when you book a boat day, so we can confirm whether it is in the pickup area.
