02Route 1095 is about 135 to 146 km long, with 762 switchback turns according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
03A day trip means six hours on the road, so Pai is better as an overnight stop or as part of a longer trip.

The short answer: about three hours, 150 to 250 baht

The Thaiger's 2026 Thailand guide lists Chiang Mai to Pai by local minivan at 150 to 250 baht, around three hours. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) wrote in June 2021 that from Chiang Mai International Airport it is about three hours by minivan to Pai's bus station. Those are the two most recent figures we found, and they agree with each other.

Distances vary by source. Wikipedia puts Pai about 146 km north-west of Chiang Mai, Wikivoyage's Pai guide says 135 km by Route 1095, and the Wikivoyage Mae Hong Son Loop guide says roughly 120 km. Because the sources differ, we do not give a precise figure: treat it as roughly 135 to 146 km, and allow three hours plus a rest stop.

The road: Route 1095 and its curves

Wikipedia says Pai lies on Route 1095, which connects Mae Hong Son with Chiang Mai. It adds that the Thai government began developing the road in 1967 and did not finish paving it until the early to mid-1990s. TAT's January 2026 feature says the road from Chiang Mai to Pai is known for 762 switchback turns.

TAT wrote in 2021 that the whole road from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son is so sinuous that people make T-shirts about its 1,864 curves, so that is the figure for the full route, not for Pai alone. Wikivoyage's Pai guide calls it a steep and winding drive that takes several hours, says police report an average of two accidents a day on the road, and says there are more in the rainy season. That claim is undated, so treat it with care.

Minivan, bus or motorbike: your options

Wikivoyage's Pai guide lists one operator, Prempracha, with hourly minivans from Chiang Mai's Arcade terminal between 05:30 and 17:30 at 150 baht, plus a comfort stop at the half-way village of Mae Sae. That entry is dated September 2017, so it shows how the service works but not today's operator or fare. Wikivoyage's Mae Hong Son Loop guide says public buses connect all legs of the loop. Check current times with your hotel or a booking office.

Wikivoyage says a novice rider should expect five or six hours by motorbike, including stops, and that the higher stretches are chilly. Its Chiang Mai guide says an international driving licence is legally required for a motorbike, even if rental shops do not ask for it. Wikipedia notes that there have been no commercial flights to Pai since 2017, so the usual way in is by road.

If you get car-sick: what the NHS and Wikivoyage say

The NHS lists simple steps for motion sickness: sit in the front of a car, look straight ahead at a fixed point such as the horizon, breathe fresh air, close your eyes and breathe slowly, and break up long journeys to get fresh air and drink water. It advises against reading or using devices and against heavy meals, spicy food or alcohol shortly before or during travel. It also suggests ginger.

The NHS says a pharmacist can recommend remedies, including tablets, patches for adults and children over 10, and acupressure bands that do not work for everyone. Wikivoyage's Pai guide suggests carrying a plastic bag and motion-sickness pills. If you book a minivan, ask for a front seat when you reserve, and plan the pharmacy visit before the day, not at the station.

When to go: cool-season mist and the busy months

TAT's January 2026 feature describes winter in Pai as the season of a thick, milky fog over the rice fields in the mornings, with the Yun Lai Viewpoint a favourite spot to watch the sun burn through. It also mentions the Sai Ngam hot spring, where the water stays at 34 degrees Celsius according to local tour operators. The same feature says Chiang Mai cools from November to February.

Wikivoyage's Pai guide says it can be hard to find a room in the busy season, October to February, and that there are now around 350 guest houses and hotels. Wikivoyage also says there is spare capacity off-season. If you travel in the rainy season, remember the Wikivoyage remark about more accidents, and give yourself buffer time on the way back to Chiang Mai.

Day trip or overnight: is Pai worth the road?

A day trip from Chiang Mai means about six hours on the road, which leaves little time in Pai. Wikivoyage describes the centre as compact and best explored on foot, with sights further out such as Pai Canyon, about 8 km from town. The Thaiger's 2026 guide says Chiang Mai alone justifies four to five days, and that adding Pai or the full Mae Hong Son Loop makes it a week to ten days.

So we suggest Pai as a night or two, not as a rushed day. If your time in the north is short, you may do better to stay near Chiang Mai and use the days for what is close. That includes the temples, a cooking class and our own mountain day, which you can read about below. Do not squeeze all of them into a trip that also includes the Pai road.

A mountain day without the Pai road: our Doi Inthanon tour

We run no tour to Pai. Our nearest mountain trip is the elephant sanctuary and Doi Inthanon tour, from $40 per person. It takes 10 to 12 hours, with hotel pickup in the morning, an elephant sanctuary with no riding, a drive of about 100 km south-west to Thailand's highest mountain, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road, and a guided waterfall hike. Lunch is included.

The Doi Inthanon park fee, 300 baht per adult and 150 per child, is paid on the day unless your quote says otherwise, and the top is cooler than the city, so bring a light jacket. If you plan Pai too, book the mountain day before you leave for Pai or after you return, not on the day of the minivan. Our Chiang Mai three-day plan shows one way to space it.

Practical checklist

  • Allow about three hours each way, and book the minivan through your hotel or a booking office.
  • Ask a pharmacist about motion-sickness remedies before the day, and carry a plastic bag.

  • If you hire a motorbike, bring an international driving licence, which Wikivoyage says is legally required.
  • Book a room early if you go between October and February.
