Short answer
For snorkelling from the sand, Phuket's best bets are Ya Nui, Freedom Beach and Ao Sane in the south and west, in the calm months from November to April. By short boat, Racha Yai is about 30 minutes away, Coral Island and the Khai Islands about 15, and Phi Phi about an hour. The Similan Islands, the clearest water, are open from 15 October 2026 to 15 May 2027 and are a long day from Phuket. In the monsoon, from May to October, choose a sheltered bay or a boat day.
From the beach: Ya Nui, Freedom and Ao Sane
Phuket 101 picks Ya Nui, Freedom and Ao Sane as the best beaches for snorkelling and clear water. Ya Nui is a cove about 120 metres wide with rocky ends that create a habitat for marine life; the guide lists parrotfish, angelfish and the occasional octopus a few metres from shore, and says the water can be quite clear and calm in high season. Wikivoyage adds that it has good snorkelling on a shallow reef, with gentle waves from December to March.
Freedom Beach is a 300-metre stretch of sand next to Patong. According to Phuket 101 you reach it by longtail boat from southern Patong in the dry season, for around 1,200 to 1,500 baht round trip, or on foot down a steep 15 to 20 minute forest path. Ao Sane is described as rugged and hidden, for snorkelling and diving. Kata Noi has some fish near the rocks, but the guide says coral is minimal.
Short boat rides: Coral Island, Khai and Racha
Phuket 101's island guide, updated on 4 October 2026, gives the crossings: about 15 minutes by speedboat to Coral Island (Koh Hae) and the Khai Islands, and about 30 minutes to Racha Yai from Chalong Pier. At Coral Island, Wikivoyage reports staghorn coral reefs about 100 metres from shore on Long Beach and 50 metres at Banana Beach, and warns of heavy boat traffic, so stay inside the buoyed areas.
Phuket 101 says Racha Yai is easy to snorkel by walking into the water at Siam Bay or Ter Bay, where coral and fish appear within minutes, although it gets busy with day-trippers. The Khai Islands have shallow water filled with colourful fish, but the guide calls them commercial and sometimes crowded, and says feeding fish by hand is not recommended. Its day-tour price ranges are 800 to 1,350 baht for Khai, 1,100 to 2,400 for Racha and 1,700 to 2,200 for Coral Island.
Phi Phi and Bamboo Island: a full day on the water
Wikipedia puts the Phi Phi Islands 46 kilometres south-east of Phuket, and Phuket 101 gives about an hour by speedboat. On our Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat tour, from $75 per person, the snorkelling is at Bamboo Island, over the reef close to the beach, with a swim in Pileh Lagoon. A mask, snorkel and life jacket are included, with an English-speaking guide on a boat of up to 35 guests.
Swimming at Maya Bay is not allowed, so it is not a snorkelling stop, and Maya Bay is closed every year from 1 August to 30 September. The day lasts about 8.5 hours, with hotel pickup at about 7:00 to 8:30 am. On our tour the national park fee, 400 baht per adult and 200 per child, is paid in cash; we give it as what the operator collects, not as an official rate. Our Bamboo Island guide covers the stop.
The Similan Islands: the clearest water, but a long day from Phuket
Pattaya Mail reported that the Similan Islands reopened on 15 October 2026, and that the 2026–2027 season runs until 15 May 2027. Wikipedia says the islands lie 70 kilometres off the coast of Phang Nga, that the park limits visitors to 3,850 a day, and that access is mainly from Tab Lamu port near Khao Lak. Pattaya Mail describes boat journeys of about 90 minutes from the pier to the islands.
From Phuket this is a long day: Phuket 101 gives a two-hour minibus drive plus a 1.5-hour boat ride, a day-tour price of 2,500 to 3,100 baht and a park fee of 500 baht for foreign visitors. All boat passengers must wear life jackets, Pattaya Mail says. Our guides to the Similan Islands season, the day trip from Khao Lak and Similan or Phi Phi cover the choice.
Which month for which snorkelling
Wikivoyage's Phuket page says diving is best from mid-October to May, when seas are calm and days are rain-free, and that in the summer monsoon water clarity goes down. For the beaches the pattern holds: Phuket 101 says the west coast gets strong waves from May to October, and Wikivoyage says Ya Nui has crashing surf in the monsoon and swimming there is not advised.
So November to April is the season for the sand-and-reef spots. From May to October, look at sheltered bays or a boat day; Phuket 101 says Phang Nga Bay stays calm because the cliffs protect it, and that tours to Phi Phi still run, although the boat ride can be rougher. The Similans are closed from 16 May to 14 October. See our guide to the best beaches in Phuket for the wind side.
Protecting the reef: sunscreen, feeding and standing on coral
At the Similans' opening on 15 October 2026, Pattaya Mail reported, park officials promoted coral-friendly sunscreen and responsible travel. Nation of Change reported in August 2021 that Thailand bans sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor or butylparaben in marine national parks, with fines of up to 100,000 baht. Check the label before a Phi Phi or Similan day; our reef-safe sunscreen guide covers the details.
Wikivoyage's Coral Island entry warns of heavy boat traffic all day, so keep close to the buoyed swimming areas, and Phuket 101 says feeding fish by hand disrupts marine life. A life jacket, which our tour includes, also keeps you from standing on coral. If you are a weak swimmer, read our Phi Phi tour for non-swimmers guide before you choose between a beach and a boat day.
Which one should you pick?
For one free afternoon between November and April, go to Ya Nui with your own mask. For a half day without a long boat ride, take Coral Island or Racha Yai. For a full day with a lagoon, a beach and a reef swim, take the Phi Phi day. For the clearest water and you are in Phuket between 15 October and 15 May, consider the Similans, and accept the early start.
Who should not book our Phi Phi day: pregnant women, infants under 1 year and guests over 70 cannot join the speedboat, and the ride can be bumpy in the open sea, so take seasickness tablets if you need them. Guests with back problems should consider a bigger boat. Bring a towel, swimwear, sunscreen and a dry bag; towels are not included. Our seasickness guide has more.
Practical checklist
- Choose by month: November to April for beach snorkelling, May to October for sheltered bays or a boat day.
- Bring or rent a mask and snorkel for Ya Nui and Freedom; Wikivoyage says they can be rented from shops all over the island.
- Stay inside the buoyed areas at Coral Island and watch for boat traffic.
- Do not feed the fish and do not stand on coral.
- Check the Similan season: open from 15 October 2026 to 15 May 2027.
- For the Phi Phi day, bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a dry bag and cash for the park fee.
