What is a good 10 day itinerary for Thailand: Bangkok plus Phuket, with boat days?

A ten-day Thailand plan with one flight and two bases: the Bangkok temples first, then Phuket with a Phi Phi or Phang Nga boat day, an elephant morning and rest days, plus what to swap for April to September.

Short answer

A good 10 day Thailand itinerary uses two bases: 3 nights in Bangkok and 6 nights on the Andaman coast around Phuket, with one flight between them. Plan three or four tour days (a Phi Phi speedboat day from $75, a Phang Nga Bay day from $85, an elephant morning from $95) and leave the rest free. The Andaman coast is driest from December to March, the Similan Islands are open from 15 October to 14 May, and for April to September Koh Samui replaces Phuket.

01Two bases and one flight is the realistic load for 10 days: 3 nights in Bangkok, 6 on the Andaman coast.
02Plan three or four tour days, not seven, because our boat days run about 8.5 hours and the Similan day 12 to 13.
03Use Phuket from November to March and Koh Samui from April to September.

The plan in one line: two bases, nine nights

Spend 3 nights in Bangkok, then fly south for 6 nights around Phuket. Ten days gives you one city and one coast without a day lost to every move, and it keeps the buffer inside the trip: if a boat day is moved by the sea, you still have a free day on the coast. Add Chiang Mai only if you can give it three nights and drop Phuket to three; our two week itinerary shows that three-base version.

Season decides the coast. The 1991 to 2020 normals for Phuket Airport give 32 to 117 mm of rain a month from December to March, against 399 mm in September, and the Similan Islands are open from 15 October to 14 May. From April to September, choose Koh Samui instead, where the normals show 83 mm in April and 102 to 134 mm a month from May to September. Our Andaman or Gulf guide has the month-by-month comparison.

Nights 1 to 3: Bangkok

Use day two for the old city. Our Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun tour is from $75 per person and takes about 4 hours on foot from about 8:30 am, with the three entrance tickets included (500, 300 and 200 baht at the gate). The dress code is strict, so cover your shoulders and knees, and the palace sometimes closes early or all day for royal ceremonies. Our dress code and hours guide has the detail.

Day three can be a day trip or an evening. The Ayutthaya day trip is from $25 per person and about 9 hours, with temple fees of around 280 baht on the day, and the tuk-tuk food tour is from $40 for about 4 hours in the evening. If you only have time for one, take the day trip on day three and keep the evening free after a long day in the heat.

Getting from Bangkok to Phuket

Fly. The slow alternative is a train and a minivan: The Man in Seat 61, a rail guide updated on 1 October 2026, describes the sleeper train 85 leaving Bangkok at 19:50 and arriving in Surat Thani at 06:23, followed by an air-conditioned minivan to Phuket. The minivans leave from 09:00 and take 4 hours 30 minutes. It is a pleasant trip, but it spends a night and most of a day on the move.

Book the flight for the morning of day four if you can, so that the afternoon is free to settle in. Before you land, read our guides to the airport to Patong transfer and to taxi and Grab prices. If you plan to rent a scooter, read our scooter rental rules first: the UK Foreign Office notes that many travel insurance policies expect you to hold the correct licence for the vehicle.

Nights 4 to 9: Phuket and the boat days

Put the first boat day two days after you land. The Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat tour is from $75 per person for about 8.5 hours, with pickup between about 7:00 and 8:30 am and a park fee of 400 baht per adult and 200 per child paid in cash, which is what the operator collects, not an official rate. The James Bond Island and Phang Nga canoe tour is from $85 and includes the park fee. Choose one: our Phi Phi or James Bond Island comparison helps.

Add the Phuket elephant sanctuary morning, from $95 per person for 5 to 6 hours, on a day without a boat. It is hands-off, with no riding, feeding or bathing, and it is often full one to two weeks ahead, so book early. From 15 October to 14 May the Similan Islands day, from $105, is the long option: 12 to 13 hours, a pickup as early as 5:30 am and passport copies sent the day before.

How many tour days in ten

Plan three or four, with a free day between the long ones. Our boat days run about 8.5 hours, the Similan day 12 to 13 hours, and the operator warns that the speedboat can be bumpy in the open sea, so bring seasickness tablets if you need them. Pregnant women, infants under 1 year and guests over 70 cannot join our speedboat days, so check everyone in your group before you book.

Keep the first and last days short. A flight on the morning of day four leaves the afternoon to settle, and the last day should have no tour on it. If the sea is unsafe, the operator moves a trip to another date or refunds it, which is why one free day on the coast is worth more than another tour. For beaches and viewpoints on the free days, see our guides to Phuket's best beaches and viewpoints.

Pack for the sun as well as the sea. Phuket Airport's mean daily highs are 33.2 degrees in February and 33.6 in March, and Thailand's national parks ban sunscreen containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-MBC or butylparaben, with fines up to 100,000 baht. Our reef safe sunscreen guide explains what to buy before you fly, so you are not choosing at the pier.

Entry steps and the order to book

Passport holders from the 60 countries on the Royal Gazette list, including the UK, the United States, Canada, Australia, India and most of Europe, can enter for tourism for up to 30 days since 15 September 2026, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Nine nights fits easily, but check your own nationality. Everyone, including children, must also complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 3 days before arrival, on tdac.immigration.go.th only.

Book in this order: flights, then the tour you care most about, then the rest. Send us your dates and your hotels in Bangkok and Phuket, and we confirm availability, pickup times and totals on WhatsApp before you pay. The Phi Phi day is the natural centrepiece of a Phuket week, and the Maya Bay closure from 1 August to 30 September is the one date to avoid if the beach is your reason for going.

Practical checklist

  • Choose the coast by month: Phuket from November to March, Koh Samui from April to September.
  • Book the Bangkok to Phuket flight for the morning of day four, and keep the last day free of tours.
  • Plan three or four tour days in ten, with a free day between the long ones.
  • Send passport copies the day before a Similan trip, and book the elephant morning one to two weeks ahead.
  • Complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 3 days before you land.

Questions and answers

Is 10 days enough for Thailand?

Yes, for two bases: 3 nights in Bangkok and 6 nights on one coast, such as Phuket. It is not enough to add Chiang Mai and a second coast without rushing.

How many days should I spend in Bangkok?

Three nights is enough for the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, one day trip or an evening food tour, and a rest. Our Grand Palace tour takes about 4 hours.

What is the best month for a 10 day trip to Phuket?

December to March. Phuket Airport's 1991 to 2020 normals give 32 to 117 mm of rain a month in those months, and the Similan Islands are open from 15 October to 14 May.

Can I go from Bangkok to Phuket by train?

Not directly. The Man in Seat 61 describes a sleeper train to Surat Thani arriving at 06:23, then a minivan of 4 hours 30 minutes from 09:00 onwards. Most 10-day travellers fly.

Should I do Phi Phi or James Bond Island?

Choose one in a short trip. Phi Phi is about beaches and snorkelling, and Phang Nga Bay is about limestone towers, caves and the floating village, with the park fee included on our James Bond Island tour.
