Short answer
Hua Hin is about 200 km from Bangkok, and the best train is the 07:30 air-conditioned railcar from Krung Thep Aphiwat, which Seat61's timetable shows arriving at 10:31. Seat61 lists the seat at 410 baht, while The Thaiger put it at 330 baht in January 2025. Buses from the Southern Bus Terminal take about 3.5 hours, according to Wikivoyage, and the airport's own page lists a Suvarnabhumi bus to Hua Hin at about 325 baht. A taxi is a negotiated fare of around 2,000 baht.
The 07:30 railcar is the best train, and it arrives before lunch
Seat61's Thailand page, dated 2026, lists train 43, an air-conditioned diesel railcar, leaving Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal at 07:30 and reaching Hua Hin at 10:31, just over three hours. The Thaiger gave the same train number and departure time in January 2025 and described the journey as a little more than three hours. The return, train 40, leaves Hua Hin at 14:36 and reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat at 18:05, according to Seat61, so a day trip is possible if you start early.
Seat61 gives the fare for a seat on an air-conditioned fast railcar to Hua Hin as 410 baht. The Thaiger put the usual price of a seat on train 43 at 330 baht in January 2025. We could not open the State Railway of Thailand's own fare table, so treat both figures as a guide and confirm the price at the ticket counter or online. Wikivoyage says there are up to ten daily departures and a journey of about four hours.
The slow train from Hua Lamphong: cheap and needs no booking
Seat61 lists a third-class train, number 261, leaving Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station at 09:20 and arriving at Hua Hin at 13:50, which is four and a half hours. It says no reservation is needed, the train cannot sell out, and you buy a ticket on the day. Its fare table gives 94 baht for a third-class seat on a rapid train to Hua Hin and 150 baht for a second-class seat on a rapid train.
Wikivoyage says that arriving by train is convenient but often slower than the bus. The slow train suits someone who wants to see the countryside, who has no fixed arrival time and who does not mind a non-air-conditioned carriage. If you have a hotel check-in time or a meeting in Hua Hin, take the 07:30 railcar or a bus instead. Always check the day's timetable before you plan, because timings change.
Buses: the Southern Bus Terminal, and the airport coach
Wikivoyage says regular buses to Hua Hin leave from the Sai Tai Mai (Southern) bus terminal and take around 3.5 hours, with the first-class fare under 200 baht, and lists departures through the day. That entry is dated December 2016 and a minivan fare of 180 baht is of the same era, so use these as a floor and ask at the counter. Another Wikivoyage entry for a bus from Mo Chit gave 155 baht, also without a recent date.
If you are arriving by plane, you can skip Bangkok. The airport's own page for provincial buses lists a Suvarnabhumi to Hua Hin District route from 07:30 to 18:30 at about 325 baht and asks travellers to check the fare again. The page for one coach operator says tickets have no special child or senior fares, the booking name must match the passport, changes cost 30 baht per person with two days' notice, and one 20 kg checked bag is free.
Minivans and taxis: faster door to door, but check the price
Wikivoyage describes minivans from Hua Hin's northbound station on Soi 51 to Bangkok's Southern, Mo Chit 2 and Ekkamai bus stations, and says passengers can ask to get off at a Skytrain or metro stop on the way into the city. In the other direction, minivans leave from Bangkok's bus stations. Because the entry dates from 2017, check the departure point before you go.
Wikivoyage says a taxi between Hua Hin and Bangkok, about 200 km, is widely advertised and that the price after negotiation should be around 2,000 baht; it gives no date for that figure. The Thaiger reported in June 2022, citing a Royal Gazette notice, that Bangkok-licensed taxis need not use meters outside Bangkok and six nearby provinces, so a taxi to Hua Hin is a negotiated price. Agree it, and ask whether tolls are included.
Where you arrive in Hua Hin, and how to get to your hotel
Wikivoyage places Hua Hin railway station just west of the city centre, and a smaller station, Nong Kae, in the south, where only a limited number of ordinary trains call. The main government bus station is on Phetkasem Road, about three kilometres south of the centre, where it says a tuk-tuk costs around 180 baht and a motorcycle taxi 60 baht. The Roong Reuang coach terminal is about seven kilometres north of the centre.
Once you are in town, Wikivoyage says green songthaews run up and down Phetkasem Road about every ten minutes for a fare of 10 baht. Some of these entries were last updated in 2021, so ask your hotel which station or terminal is closest to the door and whether it can send a car. The wrong station can add a long, expensive last leg.
Which one to choose
Choose the 07:30 railcar if you want a comfortable, predictable ride and your hotel is near the station. Choose the Southern Bus Terminal bus if you want a cheaper fare and do not mind a 3.5 hour road trip that depends on traffic. Choose the airport coach if you land at Suvarnabhumi and do not want to go into Bangkok first, and choose a taxi only for a group or a late arrival, after agreeing a price.
Avoid two things. Do not buy a train ticket online for a day you have not checked against the timetable, and do not accept a taxi price that leaves the tolls open. For help with Bangkok's own transport before you leave, our guides to Suvarnabhumi Airport to the city and Bangkok BTS and MRT fares explain the options.
Adding a market day before you go south
A day in Bangkok before the trip suits our Damnoen Saduak floating market and Maeklong railway market tour, from $25 per person. It is a small-group day trip of about 7 hours from a central meeting point near a Skytrain or metro station, with a drive of about 1.5 hours south-west, a longtail boat ride at the floating market, a stop at Wat Bang Kung and the train passing through the Maeklong market.
Lunch is not included, and hotel pickup in central Bangkok is available at extra cost. The meeting time is set by the train timetable at Maeklong and confirmed with your booking. Do the market day the day before your journey to Hua Hin, not the same day, because the tour ends back in central Bangkok after about 7 hours and the traffic can delay it.
Practical checklist
- Check the day's train timetable and fare before you decide, because Seat61 and The Thaiger give different prices for the 07:30 railcar.
- For a cheap, relaxed journey take the third-class train from Hua Lamphong, which needs no reservation.
- If you fly into Suvarnabhumi, ask about the airport coach to Hua Hin and check the fare.
- Agree a taxi price, tolls included, before you get in.
- Ask your hotel which station or bus terminal is closest, and whether it can send a car.
- Do the Damnoen Saduak market day the day before you leave Bangkok.
