Short answer
Four floating markets are worth comparing near Bangkok, and only one is a daily morning market. Damnoen Saduak, about 100 km south-west of the city, is the most famous and the most touristy. Amphawa runs from Friday to Sunday and public holidays, from midday into the evening. Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom are inside Bangkok, on the Thonburi side, and open only at weekends. For a first visit with the least planning, our day trip from $25 per person combines Damnoen Saduak with the Maeklong railway market.
Which floating market for which trip
Choose by day of the week and by how far you want to travel. Damnoen Saduak is the famous one and works in the morning, any day. Amphawa is a weekend afternoon and evening market, popular with Thai visitors. Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom are the closest, inside Bangkok, and open only on Saturdays and Sundays. If you have a weekday morning free and want the classic photograph, it is Damnoen Saduak.
All four are, in different degrees, set up for visitors. Wikipedia calls Damnoen Saduak primarily a tourist attraction. Wikivoyage's Thonburi guide says Taling Chan is not authentic either but feels more genuine and lively, and calls Khlong Lat Mayom more authentic and more fun than the Wat Sai market. So the question is not which one is real, but which fits your calendar. Our guide to floating market or Ayutthaya covers the choice against a temple day.
Damnoen Saduak: the famous morning market
Damnoen Saduak is in Ratchaburi province, about 100 kilometres south-west of Bangkok, according to Wikipedia. It says the market is busiest from 07:00 to 09:00 and active until noon, and that a roof was built so it can run every day and all day. GoAsia's October 2026 guide, which cites the Tourism Authority of Thailand, also says to arrive early and see it before noon. Wikipedia describes the canal, dug from 1866 to 1868, and a maze of narrow khlongs.
It is also the most touristy. Wikipedia says it is crowded with tourists, considered a tourist trap, with overpriced wares, and noted for lacking cultural authenticity, although it remains popular. It adds that it includes three smaller markets: Ton Khem, the largest, Hia Kui, with souvenir shops, and Khun Phitak, the smallest and least crowded. Our own information is more positive: the boat ride through the side canals is the best part, and it is the most photogenic.
Amphawa: Friday to Sunday, afternoon into the evening
Amphawa is in Samut Songkhram province. Wikivoyage says the floating market opens at weekends, Friday to Sunday, and is an afternoon market that gets going around noon and is at its best around 15:00. Thai Wikipedia gives Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, from 12:00 to 20:00. English Wikipedia says the district is about 50 km from Bangkok, less than an hour and a half away. Our Amphawa guide covers it in detail.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand wrote in 2020 that Amphawa, compared with Damnoen Saduak, was not yet overrun by flag-following group tours and had many Thai visitors shopping, but that it is busy at weekends, and it suggested a midweek visit. Since Wikivoyage and Thai Wikipedia give Friday to Sunday for the floating market itself, check what is open on a weekday. Wikivoyage says hotels sell out at weekends and advises booking at least a week ahead.
Check the water before you go. Thai PBS World reported on 28 October 2026 that high tides swelled the canals and flooded walkways and shops at Amphawa Floating Market, which residents called the worst tidal surge in decades, and that provincial authorities issued a flood warning from 27 October to 5 November. The Nation reported water in Mae Klong Market the same day.
Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom: the Bangkok weekend pair
Both are in Taling Chan district on the Thonburi side. Wikipedia says Taling Chan Floating Market is on the Khlong Chak Phra canal and open only on weekends, from about 08:30 to 16:00, with live Thai music from 11:00 to 14:00; Wikivoyage's older entry gives 07:00 to 17:00. Khlong Lat Mayom, according to Wikipedia, is open only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and opened on 20 November 2004.
Wikipedia counts 404 stalls in seven zones at Khlong Lat Mayom and says visitors can take a boat from there to the two other Taling Chan markets. Wikivoyage says the easiest way is the BTS Silom line to Bang Wa, then a taxi, and that bus 79 reaches Taling Chan from Ratchadamnoen Klang Road. Wikivoyage calls Khlong Lat Mayom more authentic and more fun than the Wat Sai market. Neither needs a long journey, so they suit a weekend afternoon.
Getting there and how long it takes
For Damnoen Saduak, GoAsia's October 2026 guide says air-conditioned coaches leave Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal, the first at 05:50 and then every 40 minutes, and take about 2 hours. For Amphawa, the Tourism Authority of Thailand wrote in 2020 that a minivan from the Mo Chit or Sai Tai Mai terminals is usually the cheapest option, for a drive of nearly 2 hours. Both are full-day trips by public transport.
Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom are the only two you can do as a half-day: Wikivoyage's Bangkok guide says the State Railway's Light Red line connects Bang Sue and Taling Chan for the floating market. On our own tour the drive south-west is about 1.5 hours, and the whole day about 7 hours. The tour meets at a central point near a BTS or MRT station, so you do not need to find a bus terminal.
Boats, prices and how to avoid an overcharge
At Damnoen Saduak the boat is the price to watch. GoAsia's October 2026 guide says that, at Yuwanda Pier, the Tourism Authority of Thailand lists a rowing boat at 300 to 400 baht and a longtail at 600 baht for six to eight passengers for about an hour, and advises asking whether a quote is per person or per boat. Wikivoyage warns of a drop-off about a kilometre from the centre, where a boat can cost 1,000 baht or even more.
The Thaiger reported on 20 June 2025 a complaint from a visitor who said she paid 9,500 baht for a roughly three-hour private longtail trip at Damnoen Saduak, which is an account from the customer, not a verified price. At Amphawa, the Tourism Authority of Thailand said in 2020 that a private boat starts at 500 baht and a shared boat at 50 baht a head for about an hour. Agree the price, the time and the route before you board.
Where our day trip fits, and who should skip it
Our Damnoen Saduak and Maeklong tour costs from $25 per person and takes about 7 hours. You walk Maeklong Railway Market and watch the train pass, then ride a longtail boat through the canals at Damnoen Saduak and have time to browse, then visit Wat Bang Kung. The price includes transport from the Bangkok meeting point, an English-speaking guide, the boat ride and drinking water; lunch is not included. Our Maeklong guide explains the train timing.
It does not suit you if you want Amphawa, the evening or the fireflies: that market is not on our route, and it runs only Friday to Sunday. It also does not suit anyone who dislikes a crowded morning market. For a quieter feel, go to Taling Chan on a weekend by yourself. Our price guide for the Damnoen Saduak tour lists what you pay on the day, and the why-book article says what the tour does best.
