Short answer
Ao Nang is a base more than a beach, so the best things to do start with the sea: the Railay peninsula is about 15 minutes away by longtail, and our Krabi 4 Islands speedboat day is from $35 per person. Inland, the Tiger Cave Temple is 22 km away and the Emerald Pool is about 90 minutes by road. In town, expect evening markets, Muay Thai on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and a walk to Pai Plong Beach. A rainy day suits a massage or a cooking class.
Start with the sea: boat days from Ao Nang
Ao Nang beach is the departure point for boats to Railay, Poda and Chicken Island, according to Wikivoyage, which says ticket booths with price lists stand at both ends of the beach. Phuket 101 lists the same islands, plus Tup and Mor, which it says take about 30 minutes by boat from Ao Nang. These short crossings are why people stay here: you can be on a beach with limestone cliffs within half an hour.
Our Krabi 4 Islands speedboat tour is from $35 per person, with hotel pickup at about 7:30 to 8:40 am and a return at about 2:00 pm. The Hong Islands day, from $40, returns at about 3:30 pm, and the Krabi 7 Islands sunset tour, also from $40, returns at about 7:30 to 8:00 pm. Our 4 Islands or Hong Islands guide helps you choose between them.
Railay and Phra Nang: the nearest big beach
Railay is the most popular destination in Krabi, according to Phuket 101, and it is a 15-minute longtail ride from Ao Nang. It has no road, so you go by boat from the beach, at roughly 100 baht each way according to older notes on Wikivoyage. West Railay is the swimming beach, and Phra Nang is the cove with the shrine cave. See our guides to Railay Beach and Phra Nang Cave Beach.
Go early or late. Thai Holiday Guide says day-trip boats crowd Phra Nang from about 11 am to 3 pm, and that the 8 am longtails from Ao Nang carry far fewer people. Phuket 101 also recommends a boat to Railay West at sunset for visitors staying in Ao Nang. Check the time of the last boat back before you stay on, as boats run less often after dark.
Beaches you can walk to from town
Wikivoyage is frank about Ao Nang Beach: it calls it more a base for exploring Krabi than an important destination, with the east side more scenic and swimmer-friendly than the west. A better short walk is to Pai Plong Beach: from the eastern edge of Ao Nang Beach a trail of 10 to 15 minutes, steep in places, leads to a small cove that Wikivoyage calls the most scenic and peaceful beach you can walk to. It says the trail is best avoided by elderly or disabled people and small children.
Nopparat Thara is the quieter long beach to the west. Wikivoyage says it is good for a morning stroll or a sunset, but narrows at high tide, and that you should ask locals about jellyfish before swimming. It also advises not swimming near Khlong Haeng, the creek between Ao Nang Beach and Nopparat Thara. Thai Holiday Guide says the mainland beach itself is free; the park fee applies only when you land on the islands.
Inland: the temple, the pools and the mangroves
Three inland trips are worth a day each. The Tiger Cave Temple is 22 km from Ao Nang, according to Thai Holiday Guide, with a stairway of about 1,260 steps that is best climbed at dawn. The Emerald Pool and hot springs are about 90 minutes from Ao Nang by road, according to Phuket 101, with entry at 400 baht for foreign adults. Neither fits around a boat tour on the same day.
Phuket 101 also describes kayaking through the Ao Luk mangroves, within Than Bok Khorani National Park about 50 km from Ao Nang, where foreign visitors pay a national park fee. Wikivoyage describes the Tab Kak Hang Nak nature trail, a steep jungle walk north-west of Ao Nang to a viewpoint, in an older entry; it says not to try it in flip-flops, and that walkers sign in at the trailhead. Check the trail's current state locally.
Evenings: sunsets, markets and Muay Thai
Sunset is the first plan. Andaman Wave Master says Ao Nang and Railay West offer some of the most open sunset views on this coast. For food, Phuket 101 points to the Ao Nang Landmark Night Market, within walking distance on Nopparat Thara Beach, and Wikivoyage lists a Wednesday Evening Market from 16:00 to 20:00, though its entries date from February 2023, so ask your hotel before you go. Krabi Town is cheaper for food: our night market guide covers the weekend Walking Street.
Phuket 101 says Muay Thai fights run at the Ao Nang Landmark Boxing Stadium on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings. It also describes nightlife clustered at Ao Nang Center Point and Soi RCA, with open-air beer bars, and some live-music bars. Both Phuket 101 and Wikivoyage mention hostesses at the Soi RCA bars. The beach road is lively and walkable, with plenty of shops and street food.
A rainy day, or a day off the beach
Phuket 101 says Ao Nang is large enough to offer alternatives on a rainy day or when you need a break from the sun, including Thai massage and spa treatments. Wikivoyage lists Thai cooking classes, with an older price range, and diving shops that run trips to Phi Phi and local sites. Our Krabi in the rainy season guide covers how the weather changes plans.
Wikivoyage says that in the low season many places in Ao Nang shut or restrict their hours, and that high season is roughly 1 November to 30 April. If you come in the rainy months, check opening times before you walk to a restaurant. For a short outing, Thai Holiday Guide says the park's shell fossil cemetery at Ban Laem Pho is a five-minute stop; Wikivoyage is lukewarm about a paid fossil beach nearby, so keep your expectations low.
Getting around, and how many days to give it
Ao Nang is about a half-hour drive, 24 km, from Krabi airport and about 20 minutes, 13 km, from Krabi Town, according to Phuket 101. Our Krabi airport to Ao Nang guide covers the transfers. Inside town, Wikivoyage says songthaews run along the beach road and that tuk-tuks quote a fixed price per vehicle, though its fares date from 2019 and earlier, so ask first and agree the price.
Three days is a workable minimum. Andaman Wave Master's suggested plan is a first evening on the beach and a sunset at Railay West, a boat day on day two and a return to Railay for the beach and a climbing taster on day three. Add a fourth day for the temple or the pools. Our Krabi days are on the sea, so keep one dry day for the inland trips.
Practical checklist
- Book a boat day for the first fine morning, and keep a spare day in case of weather.
- Take a longtail to Railay before 11 am or in the late afternoon to miss the crowds.
- Give the Tiger Cave Temple and the Emerald Pool their own days, not a boat day.
- Walk to Pai Plong Beach in shoes with grip, not flip-flops.
- Ask your hotel which evening markets run on which days.
- Check the last boat back from Railay before you stay for the sunset.
