Short answer

The Ang Thong viewpoint on Koh Wua Talap is a steep climb of about 500 metres, with ropes for support. Our operator puts it at about 15 minutes, while the independent guide Thai National Parks says 25 to 30 minutes, so allow half an hour and wear shoes with grip. Small children and older guests can stay on the beach. The national park is closed to visitors from 1 November to 15 December 2026, and our tour runs again from 16 December. Our Ang Thong day is from $50 per person.

01The trail is about 500 metres, steep and roped; allow 15 to 30 minutes up, depending on your fitness and which source you trust.
02Wear shoes with grip: Wikivoyage warns of sharp limestone footholds and some doubtful ropes.
03Ang Thong is closed from 1 November to 15 December 2026, so the hike is off until our tour restarts on 16 December.

The climb in numbers: about 500 metres, steep, with ropes

The viewpoint is on Koh Wua Talap, the island with the park headquarters, and the trail to it is short but steep. The Department of National Parks describes the nature trail to the Pha Chan Charat viewpoint as 500 metres long, and in November 2021 it used that trail for the annual walk-and-run fitness test of its rangers. Thai National Parks, an independent guide, gives the same distance from the headquarters and says the trail is not for the faint-hearted and has a rope for support.

The timing is where sources differ. Thai National Parks and Wikivoyage both say about 25 to 30 minutes to walk up, while our operator says about 15 minutes up wooden steps and rocks with ropes to hold. Plan for the longer figure if you do not hike often, and add time at the top. Wikivoyage adds that the path uses sharp limestone as footholds, especially near the top, and has some ropes of doubtful quality, so treat them as a help and not as a handrail.

Who should climb and who should stay on the beach

The climb is worth it for fit guests. On our tour it is hard for small children and older guests, who can stay on the beach instead. Thai National Parks calls the trail not for the faint-hearted, and Wikivoyage mentions lower viewpoints along the way that have worse views but are less demanding, which may suit anyone who wants a view without the final steep part.

Skipping the top costs you one view, not the day. On our tour the beach on Koh Wua Ta Lap is where non-climbers wait, and the Thai buffet lunch and the free time for snorkelling, kayaking or the beach follow the climb. If you have a bad knee, a fear of heights or very young children, tell us when you book. Our comparison of Ang Thong and Pig Island sets the two Samui days side by side for guests who would rather not climb at all.

What you see from the top

The reward is a view across the archipelago. Thai National Parks calls the Wua Ta Lap viewpoint the park's main attraction, with a vista over all the islands, and Wikipedia says the park covers 42 islands in about 102 square kilometres of the Gulf of Thailand, east of Koh Samui. It is a Ramsar wetland site, and Wikipedia says the ranger station, bungalows, shop and restaurant are at Ao Phi beach on Koh Wua Ta Lap.

The other famous lookout, over the Emerald Lake, is on Ko Mae Ko. Thai National Parks says a trail of about 20 minutes from a nearby beach leads to a viewpoint over the lake, while Wikivoyage calls the climb strenuous and puts it at about 40 minutes. On our tour you see the lake from the walkway, and swimming in it is not allowed. You may take the hike to the lake or kayak in the mangroves instead.

Shoes, heat and water: planning the climb

Shoes matter more than fitness. Our tour listing asks for shoes with grip for the viewpoint and for the walk to the Emerald Lake, and Wikivoyage's warning about sharp limestone points the same way. Climb with both hands free for the ropes, so carry a small bag on your back, not in your hand, and leave anything you do not need at the beach.

The Thai Meteorological Department's 1981 to 2010 normals for the Koh Samui station give a mean daily maximum between 29.0 and 32.6 degrees Celsius through the year, so a steep climb is warm in every month. The NHS says to drink more cold drinks when active, avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm and avoid extreme exercise, and lists dizziness, nausea and cramps as signs of heat exhaustion. Bring water, wear a hat, go slowly and stop if you feel unwell.

When the park is closed: 1 November to 15 December 2026

Ang Thong is closed to tourism and overnight stays from 1 November to 15 December 2026, according to the Department of National Parks' closure list in the Royal Gazette of 9 January 2026. The list names the beaches at the headquarters, Koh Wua Talap and other sites, with a note that tourism and overnight stays are closed entirely. Thai National Parks says the park is usually closed on those dates, depending on the monsoon. Our tour runs again from 16 December.

The break matches the weather. The Thai Meteorological Department's 1981 to 2010 normals for Koh Samui give November an average of 506.6 mm of rain over 19.2 rainy days, the wettest month of the year, and December 210.3 mm over 13.7 days. October is second at 309.8 mm. Our price guide explains the closure and the park fee in more detail.

When a storm or the sea changes the plan

Outside the closure dates the park can still close a site at short notice. In April 2022 a summer thunderstorm with strong gusts and flash flooding damaged the service area and the beach at Ao Kha on Koh Wua Talap, and the park closed it on 29 and 30 April for repairs, reopening on 1 May, according to the Department of National Parks. That was a two-day closure, but it shows that the park, not the tour company, decides what is open.

The sea decides the crossing. The boat ride is about an hour each way, and on our tour, if the sea is unsafe, the operator moves the trip to another date or refunds it. Check the forecast the evening before, keep your plans flexible around a single date, and do not book a flight home for the evening of your Ang Thong day. The boat leaves the park at about 3:00 pm and you are at your hotel by about 5:00 pm.

How the climb fits our Ang Thong day

Our Ang Thong day is from $50 per person. After a light breakfast at the pier in the north of Samui and about an hour by speedboat, the group snorkels or spends time on the beach at Koh Wao, visits the Emerald Lake, and then lands on Koh Wua Ta Lap for the viewpoint climb, a Thai buffet lunch and free time. The travel guide and the tour schedule give the order and the times.

The national park fee is not in the price and is paid on the day. The Department's June 2022 fee schedule lists 200 baht for foreign adults at Ang Thong, while Thai National Parks gave 300 baht, and 150 for children aged 3 to 14, as of May 2026. We could not confirm which amount applies on your date, so carry the higher figure in cash. Bring shoes with grip, swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a hat.

Practical checklist

  • Check that your date is outside the closure from 1 November to 15 December 2026.
  • Wear shoes with grip for the viewpoint; leave flip-flops for the beach.
  • Carry water and a hat, and climb slowly in the heat.
  • Decide before the day whether anyone in your group will stay on the beach.
  • Keep 300 baht per adult and 150 per child in cash for the park fee.
  • Tell us about bad knees, a fear of heights or small children when you book.
