What began on 18 October

Virgin Atlantic has launched its first route to Thailand: nonstop flights between London Heathrow and Phuket. The Thaiger reports that the service began on 18 October 2026, and the Nation reports that the inaugural flight reached Phuket International Airport on Monday 19 October with 258 passengers, many of them families. Representatives of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the airport welcomed them.

The route is seasonal. According to TAT, as reported by The Thaiger, it runs until 26 March 2027. The Nation says the new service takes the number of direct weekly flights between the UK and Phuket to 11, together with Norse Atlantic Airways and TUI UK, and adds more than 3,000 seats a month.

Days, times and aircraft

Flights from London leave on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays as VS214. Return flights, VS215, leave Phuket on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The published schedule lists the London departure at 3.45 pm and arrival in Phuket at 9.55 am the next day, and the return departure from Phuket at 11.45 am with arrival at Heathrow at 7.25 pm. The Thaiger gives flight times of about 12 hours 10 minutes outbound and 13 hours 40 minutes on the way back.

The aircraft is a Boeing 787-9 with 258 seats: 31 in Upper Class, 35 in Premium and 192 in Economy, according to The Thaiger. The same report says the cabin layout may change when Virgin Atlantic refurbishes its 787-9s.

What it means for UK visitors

The Nation reports that Thailand received 759,640 visitors from the United Kingdom between 1 January and 14 October 2026, and that British visitors stay more than 14 days on average. TAT says the new flight supports its aim of attracting visitors who spend more, and it wants British travellers to extend their trips to Phang Nga, Krabi and Surat Thani as well as Phuket.

For a traveller, the practical change is choice. A direct flight means no change of plane on the way, and the 9.55 am landing leaves most of the first day in Phuket. Fares and baggage rules are set by the airline, so check them on its site before you book.

Planning your first and last days

Our morning tours start early: pickup for the Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat tour, from $75 per person, is between about 7:00 and 8:30 am, and the Phuket half-day city tour, from $25, collects you at about 8:00 to 9:00 am. With a 9.55 am landing, your first tour morning is the day after you arrive.

The return flight leaves Phuket at 11.45 am, so your last tour day is the day before. The speedboat day lasts about 8.5 hours. Send us your flight dates and your hotel, and we will suggest which day suits which tour.
