Short answer
October is the turning point of the Phuket year: the Thai Meteorological Department's 1981–2010 normals still give 320.1 mm of rain over 22.5 rainy days, the most rainy days of any month, but the park reopens Maya Bay after 30 September, the Similan Islands opened on 15 October in 2026, and Phuket 101 says the west-coast sea usually calms in the second half of the month. Hotels stay cheap, boat days run, and the second half of October is the better time to come.
October is still wet, with the most rainy days of the year
October looks like September in the table. The Thai Meteorological Department's 1981–2010 normals for the Phuket station give 320.1 mm over 22.5 rainy days, the highest count of rainy days of any month, though rainfall is a little below September's 361.2 mm. The mean daily maximum is 31.5 °C and the mean minimum 24.5 °C. The same table records 180.7 mm on a single October day, the wettest day in its 30 years. The airport station in the north records 353.4 mm over 23.3 days.
The newer 1991–2020 table on Wikipedia's Phuket City page gives 336.0 mm and 19.4 days with 1 mm or more. The Thai weather service's climate summary says the northeast monsoon usually starts in mid-October and that the southwest monsoon ends then. Sunshine recovers from September's low to 145.7 hours, about 4.7 hours a day, and humidity stays at 82 percent in the Royal Irrigation Department's figures on Wikipedia's Phuket Province page.
The sea in October: improving, but not yet reliable
Phuket 101 calls October a transition as the southwest monsoon weakens. Early in the month it still sees waves up to 2 metres on west-coast beaches such as Patong, Kata and Karon, with red flags on some days, and the east-coast beaches of Panwa and Ao Yon are the safer swim. By late October the west coast usually calms down and the beaches come back. It rates the sea as improving but still unpredictable, at 29 °C, and advises motion-sickness pills for island crossings.
That is why the date inside the month matters. Phuket 101 says that if you can choose, book the second half of October, and that a trip in the first week still works but you will spend more of it by the pool and in Phuket Town. Our guide to rip currents and red flags in Phuket explains how to read the beach flags, and the operator moves or refunds any of our boat trips when the sea is unsafe.
Maya Bay reopens after 30 September
The national park closes Maya Bay every year from 1 August to 30 September, so October is the first month in which you can land there again. Phuket 101 says the beach reopens on 1 October. The park's September 2026 survey, while the bay was closed, counted up to 278 adult blacktip reef sharks near the beach on 2 September, the highest count of its 2026 series. Our Maya Bay rules guide explains how a visit works.
Phi Phi is the first test of the reopening. Our Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat tour costs from $75 per person and takes about 8.5 hours, and the speedboat leaves Royal Phuket Marina at about 9:30. You walk in from the Loh Samah pier, visits are in rounds of up to 375 people, and swimming at the bay is not allowed. The park fee on our tour is 400 baht per adult and 200 per child, collected in cash. Phuket 101 says Phi Phi day trips run all month.
The Similan Islands open on 15 October
The Similans reopen in mid-October after five months shut. The Department of National Parks reported that Mu Ko Similan National Park received 1,409 visitors on its first official day, 15 October 2026, of whom 1,359 were day-trippers and 50 were divers, in good weather under a clear sky. On the same day the environment minister declared the Andaman marine national parks open for the season, and the department's director-general said that some openings may change with the weather.
Our Similan Islands speedboat day runs from 15 October to 14 May and costs from $105 per person. Phuket 101 says the islands are nearly empty in October and the reefs have had the whole monsoon to recover, but that the sea can still be choppy. It is a long day of 12–13 hours door to door, with pickup between about 5:30 and 7:30 am; our Similan season guide explains the dates and the daily quota.
Phang Nga Bay in October
Phang Nga Bay stays the sheltered option while the west coast is still unsettled. Phuket 101 says all tours operate normally in October unless severe weather occurs, which is fortunately not often. The James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay canoe tour costs from $85 per person, and the details we hold for it list no closed season. The boat leaves Laem Nga pier on Koh Siray at about 9:00, after hotel pickup between about 7:00 and 8:00 am.
The price includes the national park fee, lunch at Koh Panyee, snorkelling gear, sea canoeing at Hong Island with a professional paddler, and drinks and fruit on board. October rain can hit the afternoon, so bring a dry bag for your phone in the canoe. At low tide the guide may reorder the stops or shorten the canoe route into the lagoon. Our Phi Phi or James Bond Island comparison helps you choose between the two days.
The Vegetarian Festival, 10 to 18 October in 2026
The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is the main event of the month. The Tourism Authority of Thailand put the 2026 festival at 10 to 18 October, with street processions in Phuket City from 11 October and a farewell to the Nine Emperor Gods on 18 October. Phuket 101 says the pole-raising ceremony took place the evening before, on 9 October, and that the dates move every year because the festival follows the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.
Phuket 101 says the beach resorts are barely affected, while in Phuket Town many restaurants close and those that stay open serve only vegetarian food. The processions with devotees in trance are fascinating but intense, in its words, and not for everybody. Thailand's Department of Cultural Promotion listed the festival as intangible cultural heritage in 2018, according to the Tourism Authority. Our Phuket Vegetarian Festival guide has the details.
Prices, crowds and who October suits
October is cheap and quiet. Phuket 101 says hotel rates are at their lowest, beaches have almost nobody on them, you can walk into restaurants and the Similans are nearly empty, and the price of accepting the rain is a few lost beach days and the odd cancelled boat trip. Wikipedia's list of Thai public holidays gives 13 October as Navamindra Maharaj Day and 23 October as King Chulalongkorn Day, both fixed dates.
October suits flexible travellers on a budget, people who want the Similans early and quiet, and anyone who wants Maya Bay again. It does not suit those who need blue skies or a reliable swim at a west-coast beach in the first weeks. Our speedboats are not suitable for pregnant women, infants under 1 year or guests over 70. Read Phuket in September for the month before and Phuket in November for the one after.
Practical checklist
- If you can choose, book the second half of October for a calmer sea.
- Book the Similan Islands from 15 October, and bring a seasickness remedy.
- Keep a spare day for any boat trip, since the operator moves or refunds trips when the sea is unsafe.
- Check the Chinese lunar dates of the Vegetarian Festival for your year.
- Pack a rain layer, a dry bag and mineral sunscreen.
