Our Chiang Rai day trip from Chiang Mai costs from $40 per person. It is a small-group day by van of about 12 to 13 hours. In between you see the White Temple, the Blue Temple and the Black House, with a hot spring stop on the road and a break for lunch. The order of the stops can change with traffic and crowds.
Booking is on WhatsApp. Send us the date, your hotel and the number of guests. We confirm availability, the pickup time and the total before you pay, and how and when to pay is agreed with your booking. We also tell you what your price covers and what you pay on the day, so you know how much cash to carry before the trip.
What does the $40 include?
The price includes round-trip hotel transfer in Chiang Mai by van, an English-speaking guide, the stops at the White Temple, the Blue Temple, the Black House and a hot spring, drinking water, and accident insurance. Lunch is at a local restaurant. It is not in that list, so we confirm on WhatsApp what your price covers for lunch before you pay.
Entrance fees are paid on the day unless your quote says otherwise, and the next section gives the figures we can source. Hotel pickup is in central Chiang Mai, so tell us your hotel when you book. This trip does not include the Golden Triangle. A longer day that adds the Golden Triangle and a Mekong boat trip also exists and returns much later, at about 10 pm in one programme, so ask us on WhatsApp if you want that version.
Which entrance fees do you pay at the gates?
At the White Temple foreign visitors pay 200 baht from 1 January 2026, up from 100 baht, according to The Thaiger's report of 11 November 2025. Thai citizens enter free, and so do children under 120 cm and visitors aged 70 or over. The Chiang Rai Times' budget guide of September 2026 puts the Black House, the Baan Dam Museum, at about 80 baht and says the Blue Temple generally has no admission fee, though donations are welcome. That makes about 280 baht per adult for the White Temple and the Black House.
These are press and guide figures, not the sites' own notices. The Chiang Rai Times itself says to check the price at the entrance, and that Baan Dam may close for lunch around noon. Wikipedia describes the Black House as a private art museum of more than 40 buildings by the artist Thawan Duchanee, and the White Temple as a privately owned art exhibit that opened to visitors in 1997. Bring baht in cash: the Chiang Rai Times notes that some visitor information reports cash-only payment at the White Temple.
How long is the day, really?
About 12 to 13 hours, of which 6 to 7 hours are in the van. The drive is about 3 hours each way, and some operators quote 3 to 4 hours. Wikipedia places Chiang Rai about 200 km north-east of Chiang Mai and gives the official bus ride as approximately 3 hours 30 minutes, and the Chiang Rai Times says the trip usually takes around three to four hours by road. A day at the temples is mostly a day of sitting, with the stops fitted into the middle.
Because of the drive, the White Temple cannot be your first stop at opening time. With pickup at about 7:00 to 7:30 am, the group arrives after 9:30 am, while the Chiang Rai Times names the time before 9:30 am as the best, with cooler air and smaller tour groups. The same guide says weekdays are often quieter than weekends and Thai public holidays. Our programme gives about an hour at the White Temple; the guide says most visitors need 60 to 90 minutes, and closer to two hours if they also visit the Cave of Art.
Who should not book this day?
Skip it if you dislike long drives. Six to seven hours in a van is the price of three temples in one day, and the road is winding in places, so take travel sickness tablets if you need them. Children who can sit in a van for about 3 hours each way are fine, and you can ask us about child prices. If you want to linger at the White Temple, the Chiang Rai Times suggests staying overnight in Chiang Rai for a slower visit.
The Black House shows furniture made from animal skins, horns and bones, which is not to everyone's taste. If you want a gentler day, our Chiang Mai cooking class price guide covers the easy half-day option, and our Doi Inthanon tour guide covers a mountain day with a shorter drive and more nature.
What should you wear and bring?
Cover your shoulders and knees at the temples, and wear shoes that are easy to slip off, because you take your shoes off before the main halls. The Chiang Rai Times says sleeveless tops, revealing clothing and very short shorts are discouraged at the White Temple, and that staff may ask visitors to cover up. Our tour information says foreign visitors can borrow a sarong at the entrance from 2026. Photos are not allowed inside the White Temple's main hall.
Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, a charged phone for the long drive and cash in baht for the entrance fees and any drinks. Take travel sickness tablets if you need them. The Blue Temple also asks you to take off your shoes before the main hall. Our White Temple entrance fee guide covers the dress, hours and photo rules in detail.
What is the best time of year for the trip?
November to February is the most comfortable time for a day with this much sitting in a van and walking at the temples. Our tour information says April is the hottest month, the rainy season runs from about mid-May to mid-October, and smoke from fires often makes the air in the north hazy between about December and April. Wikipedia's article on Chiang Mai says air pollution there occurs mainly between December and April, and that March has been called the worst month because of the smoke.
Wikipedia's article on Chiang Rai says the city is hottest in April, with an average daily maximum of 34.5 °C, and that the monsoon season runs from late April through October. Haze and rain are the two things to plan around. Ask us about your dates on WhatsApp, and remember that the order and timing of the stops can change with traffic, crowds and weather.
