Short answer

The Chiang Mai Sunday market, officially the Tha Phae Walking Street, takes over about 1 km of Ratchadamnoen Road every Sunday evening, from Tha Phae Gate towards Wat Phra Singh. Wikivoyage lists Sunday 17:00 to 23:00 as of November 2025 and says stalls open at about 16:00 but not everyone is ready until about 18:00, with vendors packing up from around 22:00. Wikipedia gives 5 pm to 10:30 pm. Smoking and drinking are banned, with fines of up to 4,000 baht. On Saturday, a smaller market runs on Wua Lai Road.

01The market runs every Sunday on Ratchadamnoen Road: Wikivoyage lists 17:00 to 23:00, but 18:00 to 22:00 is when it is fully set up.

03On a Sunday the morning cooking class leaves the evening free for the market; the evening class does not.

What the Sunday walking street is and where it runs

Wikipedia calls it the most famous handicraft and food market in Chiang Mai, known as the Tha Phae Walking Street or Chiang Mai Sunday Night Market. It takes over about one kilometre of Ratchadamnoen Road, the main street of the historic centre, which is closed to motorised traffic while it runs. Wikivoyage says it starts at Tha Phae Gate, on the east side of the old city, and runs west along Ratchadamnoen to Singharat Road at Wat Phra Singh.

Wikivoyage calls the market enormous. It takes up several blocks on either side of Ratchadamnoen, including the stretch of Prapokklao Road from the Three Kings Monument past Wat Chedi Luang. Local craft vendors lay out handmade wares and there are food vendors throughout. Because the route links the east gate with two major temples, it is easy to combine with our old city temples guide.

Hours: when to arrive for the full market

Wikivoyage lists the market on Sunday from 17:00 to 23:00, as of November 2025, and adds that it starts at about 16:00 but not everyone is set up until around 18:00. Wikipedia gives a slightly shorter window, from 5 pm until 10:30 pm. The two sources agree on the main point: the market is an evening event, and it does not run during the day.

Wikivoyage says most vendors start to pack up around 22:00. Put together, the full market is on from roughly 18:00 to 22:00, so arriving at about 18:00 gets you the complete set of stalls and leaves time to walk it end to end before the first stalls close. The walking street is a Sunday event, so do not expect the same market on another weekday.

What you can buy and eat

The Tourism Authority of Thailand described the walking street in 2017 as a place where local artists and craftspeople show and sell their work, with original fashions, jewellery, silk items and tribal decorations, plus street performers and singers. That matches Wikivoyage's description of local craft vendors selling handmade wares. The same TAT feature suggests sitting in a nearby cafe to watch the colour and action, which is a good plan if you want a break from the crowd.

For food, TAT's October 2025 feature names Chiang Mai's Wua Lai and Sunday walking streets among the places to try regional dishes such as khao soi noodles. Wikivoyage notes food vendors strewn along the whole route. We could not confirm typical prices for either goods or food from a source, so carry small notes in baht and ask the price before you order.

The rules: no smoking, no drinking, and the fine

Wikivoyage, in an entry updated in November 2025, says there is a strict smoking and drinking ban in the walking street because so many families visit, enforced by fines of up to 4,000 baht. That is a surprise for visitors used to a beer at a night market, so finish your drink before you step on to Ratchadamnoen Road, and leave cigarettes and vapes in your pocket.

Behind the rule is a plain fact: this is a family market, and the old city is full of temples. The street ends at Wat Phra Singh and passes Wat Chedi Luang. Wikivoyage's Thailand guide advises covering your shoulders and knees at sacred sites, so if you step into a temple on the way, bring a scarf. We could not confirm opening hours for the temples in the evening.

If you are in town on a Saturday: Wua Lai Walking Street

Wikipedia says that every Saturday evening a handicraft market is held along Wua Lai Road, Chiang Mai's silver street, south of the old city beyond Chiang Mai Gate. That road is closed to motorised traffic too. Wikivoyage lists the Saturday market from 17:00 to 23:00 and calls it a smaller version of the Sunday market with many of the same vendors, though that entry is dated March 2015, so check locally.

TAT's October 2025 feature names both Wua Lai and the Sunday walking street among Chiang Mai's night-time food destinations. If your dates give you only a Saturday, Wua Lai is a fair stand-in, though smaller. If you have a Sunday, choose Ratchadamnoen Road: it is the larger of the two, and it runs past the temples.

Getting there and back

Tha Phae Gate is the east gate of the old city, and Wikivoyage says the Sunday market begins in the plaza beside it. From hotels inside the old city it is a walk. Wikivoyage also says the Night Bazaar lies due east of the gate, about a 15-minute walk away, so the two can be combined in one evening. Our Night Bazaar guide compares the two.

Because the street is closed to cars, a songthaew or a ride-hailing car will have to drop you at the edge of the market. Wikivoyage says red songthaew fares are fixed at 30 baht inside the city walls, and our red truck guide explains how fares work. Work out your way home before you go in, because the market itself is a pedestrian zone.

Fitting the market around our cooking class

Our Thai cooking class at an organic farm is from $30 per person and runs in two sessions. The morning class picks you up at about 8:00 to 8:30 am and brings you back to your hotel at about 2:30 pm, which leaves the whole evening free for the Sunday market. The farm is about 45 minutes from the old city, and the class is about 6.5 hours.

The evening class picks you up at about 3:00 to 3:30 pm and returns you at about 9:30 pm. That means you would miss most of the Sunday market, which is fully set up from about 18:00 and starts to close around 22:00. So on a Sunday choose the morning class, or choose the evening class on another night. Tell us which session you want when you book.
