Short answer
On Wednesday 28 October 2026 high tides flooded Mae Klong Market and the Amphawa floating market in Samut Songkhram, along with parts of Bang Saen Beach and Samut Prakan. The Office of the National Water Resources told Bangkok and seven provinces to watch water levels from 28 to 30 October, and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation warned of high-tide flooding in Bangkok and six central provinces from 27 October to 5 November.
Water reached Mae Klong Market and Amphawa on 28 October
High tides flooded parts of Bang Saen Beach, Mae Klong and Samut Prakan on Wednesday 28 October 2026, the Nation reported. In Samut Songkhram the water covered the area around the Si Champa intersection, Wat Phet Samut and the railway line before spreading into Mae Klong Market, and local reports said levels were noticeably higher than the day before.
Thai PBS World reported that canals swelled at about 9 am, submerging riverside homes, walkways and shops at the Amphawa Floating Market. Residents called it the worst tidal surge in decades, and said the water had kept rising for two days.
Elsewhere the same tide pushed seawater past the shoreline at Bang Saen Beach in Chon Buri from early morning, reaching beachfront businesses and rows of deckchairs, and overflowed onto roads near Phra Chulachomklao Fort in Samut Prakan, where it caused traffic congestion, according to the Nation.
Why the tide is high, and how long the alerts last
The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) blamed a cold air mass from China, which strengthened easterly winds and pushed Gulf of Thailand water higher at the mouths of four rivers: the Bang Pakong, Chao Phraya, Tha Chin and Mae Klong. It asked for close monitoring from 28 to 30 October in Chachoengsao, Samut Prakan, Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Songkhram.
A separate alert from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation covers high-tide impacts in Bangkok and six central provinces from 27 October to 5 November. Samut Songkhram's authorities issued their own flood warning for low-lying areas along rivers and canals for the same period, Thai PBS World said.
The Nation said the agencies concerned were told to prepare traffic-management measures and speed up drainage, and that officials were watching sections of Sukhumvit, Suksawat and Rama II roads. The ONWR's concern is highest for communities outside the flood embankments and in riverside areas without permanent flood defences.
What it means for a floating market day from Bangkok
Our Damnoen Saduak floating market and Maeklong railway market tour walks Maeklong Railway Market, where the train passes through the stalls, then takes a longtail boat at Damnoen Saduak. Amphawa is not a stop on our tour, but Maeklong is, and the Nation reported water on the railway line and in Mae Klong Market.
The tour is timed to the train and runs rain or shine, and the guide changes the order of stops if the train is late. We have no report of how the train timetable changed on 28 October. Send us your date on WhatsApp and we check the situation before you pay.
Practical checklist
- Check the situation for your date before you travel to Samut Songkhram from 28 October to 5 November.
- Wear shoes that can get wet and keep your phone in a dry pouch.
- Expect canal traffic and vendor stalls to be disrupted at Amphawa while the tide is high.
- Allow extra time on the road to Samut Songkhram and Ratchaburi.
- Ask us on WhatsApp whether the Maeklong train is running on your day.
